Boy she loved to sun bathe! What a beautiful girl. You were blessed to have each other.

Did she ever! Just as well she had all those feathers so she didn’t get skin cancer. She always looked like she’d had a stroke and collapsed when she was having a sun bake! I’m glad she got to double her lifetime with us.

Dear friends, I’m very sad to have to tell you I had Chickie euthanised this morning. Sunday to Tuesday she seemed to be having really good days but this morning, she was lethargic, reluctant to leave the run and would stand hunched with her eyes closed. I decided that this was not the behaviour of a chicken that is healthy and I didn’t think she was going to get any better. So I made the (very) hard decision and called the vet. Dr Nikki isn’t working today so Dr Kevin did the deed. I decided I would bring her back home and bury her next to Emily and we had a good cuddle first. I followed Shad’s example and buried her with a bit of cheese so she could pay the ferryman.

When it gets less crazy, I might buy a couple of shrubs to plant over Emily and Chickie, for now they have rocks so I know where they are. If it’s ok with Bob, I will post some of my favourite photos of her as a tribute.

I think Charlie was just escort-calling for Lucy! I was suddenly aware of a commotion so I went outside. The three Faverolles were clucking away in the run and I realised Charlie was shouting from the nesting box! I lifted up the lid and she got off an egg but she wouldn’t stop yelling. She wandered about and wouldn’t stop (and it sounded slightly different to an alarm call). I had to get her to follow me up the garden and she only stopped when she saw Lucy (who wasn’t about to come and get her!) Lucy also gave her a bit of a groom, which I’ve not seen before. She settled down after that.

She is a doll! I think you should let her in.

She can come in any time she wants; the door is always open. If she thinks I'm going to open the window every time she taps on the glass she's got another think coming.

Thanks Shad. I was so cranky with humans this morning, what with their genetic breeding so chooks pump out eggs to meet someone’s bottom line, and the beak trimming so they don’t peck each other because they’re cramped in close quarters. I’m just glad I got to give her the chance of being a real chicken.
