Lol, I still remember the first post I ran into you on, someone who sounded quite young and something about a venomous snake... I didn’t notice you were all Aussies, and was freaking out at the thought of some poor kid going into a chicken coop daily with a venomous snake hanging around.

lol Yep, we can take some getting used to. I really appreciate the profile location. Such a useful tool! It boggles my mind how some people react to quite timid wild life when I think of my kitchen literally teeming with blue ring octopus! They'd come in with the oysters when the man was doing those & we'd have to round them all up, hope we hadn't missed any & walk down the track to dump them all back in the bay! Deadlier than the snakes...
And, are you absolutely sure that thing “stalking” your chickens at night isn’t a Raccoon? And your run isn’t mink-proof! For shame ;)

Well, I’ve caught up... It’s been a crazy weekend here. Friday was slaughtering then DH picked up two pallets of feed on a quick turn around ferry. (10:20 depart Saturna-12:50, ok more like “1:15 because it’s always late”, arrive on main island to pick up feed and race back to the ferry for 2:30 so he can be on the 3:10 departure that gets him home at 4:20) then we had to unload the two pallets and decided for dinner at the pub because it was such a long day and he also had setup for the election from 7-8pm. Had to take the kiddo with as well because her mom was also working the election.

Leads to Saturday DH and childs mom have work at our provincial election 7am-9pm. I was on babysitting duty to give my poor mom a break. And we got hit with winter windstorm #1. Bye bye tarps on chicken tractors, the house, house parts... all chickens made it through ok. But it was a wild night. The trailer was rocking in the wind and I hardly slept.

Today was damage control, I still haven’t found everything. $150 worth of empties (beverage cans have deposits here) bagged and waiting to be taken to town, strewn everywhere. My nesting boxes are missing in places (the light plastic ones flew away!) And, to top it off it’s cold, bitterly cold. 10 degrees Celsius inside the trailer tonight, I have the heater on full blast and just turned on the oven... trying to take the chill off before Andrew gets home from work at the pub. He’s 1 hr late. This is actually my fault, because I took the jumper cables out of the truck to prevent them from getting damaged while unloading the pallets, then was distracted by the kiddo and getting the truck emptied to get us all to the pub, so they didn’t get put back in :( ooops.

I am also very concerned about Roostie and my girls without back feathers... most of the molters have covered up or will be fully feathered very soon, but some are just not even trying to grow pin feathers! It is too darn cold too sudden.

Wow! We've had some wild weather lately too that took out the power but nothing that bad & certainly not that cold! You are a real trooper!

Wow, Kris 🤗🤗 that definitely sounds like a crazy night 😞 glad all your birds made it through okay. That stinks that you lost tarps and stuff and I'd be bundled up under so many layers 🥶

I'm tired of dog owners. We don't have predators as such ~ just roaming dogs. It's not just my chickens. It's my cats, the beehives, the wild life on our property. Dogs don't leave any of it alone. :(
It's just not right. Dogs are predators. They need to be held accountable.

I forget... are Farmers in your area legally allowed to do that? I know we can here... and I would 100% be in support of the farmers on that one, legal or not. It’s not that I am not a dog person; I love dogs, well trained and on leads when they are on someone else’s property or public places.
They can here as well. Hence the response by friend's husband.

:hugs Thank you for having us all here, Bob. I love the diversity, and all the chat... even if I can hardly keep up anymore! (Don’t take a weekend off reading or you’re 30+ pages behind all of a sudden!)

ok, I have no idea how to straighten out this comment mess... sorry everyone
I know it can be a lot to keep up on. I just love having you here. Thanks for checking in from time to time. :hugs

That's rough. How often do you get storms this bad?
At least none of the chickens blew away, right?

Good luck putting it all back together. I wish I could come help. :hugs

Maybe @Ribh could knit some sweaters for your molting chooks.
