Shopping Trip

So we have this tradition that every year a couple of days before Christmas we go to the world's largest (or second largest) indoor mall down by Philadelphia to try and find something unusual for each other. We usually head down during the day and come back late at night. So yesterday was that day so we grabbed our masks and headed out. 😷

We don't normally buy much but for me the treasure hunt is fun. I love to be in the bustle of the crowded mall. It really makes me feel the holiday for some reason. I get a fancy coffee and we end the trip with a fancy meal at a big city restaurant.

Looking back now, we should have just not gone this year. It's 3 hours round trip and even before we left we knew there would not be any indoor dining to end the day. However there is just this attitude right now that COVID is not going to take our holiday traditions from us.

What did we find when we got there?
  • No people. There was no one there. Which was probably good for Covid spread but no hustle and bustle
  • Half of the stores were simply closed. Many that were open closed early.
  • Lines to get in the stores that were open.
  • It was uncomfortable to browse. It seemed like the attitude was go in, get your stuff, leave.
  • Some stores would only let you in to pick up stuff. They expected you to stand in front of the store. Go online and buy your item with store pick up. Then you could enter the store to pick it up.
  • No help. On the rare occasion you found something in a case that you wanted to see, there were no store clerks available to help you.
Needless to say the 3 hour round trip was a complete bust. We bought nothing. We had some fast food hamburgers and came home empty handed.

How is poor BY Bob's sad shopping trip related to chickens. Well everyone knows about the adventures at roosting time around here. I was not home to assure that everyone roosted in the coop. So when I check the camera what do I not see. Phyllis.

I see Sansa next to Hattie, that's new, but no Phyllis. It's like she lives to torture me. Then I realize there are 2 black tails up on the high roost. Why does she do this to me? Why Phyllis, WHY!
:barnie:he:barnie:he
Phyllis is definitely a floater when it comes to roosting. Maybe Aurora has forced her to resort to this strategy - so when you're not around Phyllis employs it to avoid any problem with Aurora, or Aurora WAS hassling her and she ended up there. Do you have any film of roosting time?

Tax

Diana, seconds before trying to take a good-sized chunk out of my hand for not serving the left-over rice fast enough...

Maggie single mindedly focused on the imminent rice dish...

Rebate request
Requesting a tax rebate in the form of group reassurance. Maggie's new 'grey do' is just pin feathers as she finishes out her molt. Right? I am 90% sure, and will try and look closely when she roosts tonight, but she always buries her head when she sleeps which feels like a smart move to keep warm so I don't really like to disturb her, and during the day she doesn't keep still. I am reluctant to grab her because she has some other patches still molting and I worry I will hurt her.

Those look like pin feathers, the Buckeyes all had that going on as they changed their feathers 65 times from chicks to 5 months. The feather sort of unfurls from inside it, very interesting. I love the looks in Diana and Maggie's eyes, definitely the dinosaur predator gaze!

Yes indeed! Both of them have mouse trophies notched on their roost-post (if you see what I mean) so they are definitely hunters.
Note to self: do not fall over in the Chicken Palace. :lau

How many more days left in her quarantine?

I just clean it up with paper towels and an old toothbrush and soap to scrub the spot. Phyllis is very good. She hasn't pooed in the house in months.
Well that's a refined hen for sure!.
Queenie's been with me since last Wednesday, counting in the dog crate in the car overnight. So at least to next Wednesday for it to be two weeks. Temperature - she is loving it at 45-52F. Very quick moves as she hunted and scratched at the new pile. I'm okay with it as most of the day I'm in outside clothes going in and out all day anyway. She's perching on the brooder edge taking a short nap right now.
