It's hard when you also have to accommodate a non chickeneer. I'm afraid I got passive~aggressive on the man & have just never got around to replacing the Vorwerk like he wanted. He doesn't get it won't be the same dynamics & means more quarantine, more squabbling, another shift in the pecking order & a lone bird would be picked on so it means @ least 2 & my next 2 are already spoken for because I want the Aracaunas, which would bring me up to 20 chickens, which is pretty much @ my upper limit. It is a lot to try & explain to someone who grew up on a farm where a ton of birds were just shoved in together & had to manage as best they could. I want more for my birds than that.
I think you’re right. I like your strategy. I did that too, when choosing my chickens. I chose two of each and it would have been perfect but for a few loses which left my RIR a singleton, and my BO a singleton. My Leghorn is a singleton too, but that is because TSC sold her to me as a BO. Lol.

My Charlie, the Australorp, has always been an only, although she and Bessie the Barred Rock were kept in the same pen at the breeder’s. She was bottom of the pecking order, now she’s the top.

It's one of those things I find completely unacceptable about how animals are viewed and it's worldwide.
If it's considered livestock then neglect, cruelty and disposability come as standard.
If it's a pet then things are slightly better.
Better not to have thhe distinction in my opinion.
You know that I agree. All animal life has value and none should be discarded or treated with disdain and cruelty. It is one of the worsts associated with mankind.
