Do thumbprint locks work in extreme cold? What about hoarfrost collecting on them? Would have to warm & wipe it off with a finger or hand, then put your thumb on it....You can probably guess fingerwarmth is an issue for me - I need better-insulated leather gloves, or something, for coop work in this kind of weather, and I try not to take my hands out whenever possible! Maybe for me a large-dial combination lock...

I know the answers to none of your questions but I am going to try it out. I will let you know.

Ahh, thank you, I will think of it as an Escort Song and keep observing her, where and when she makes it. The Buckeyes have not made this call at all that I've heard (so far). Queenie (Buff O.) however, had been in a tribe with a rooster before they were all split up. Which prompts the question, Could this be a learned behaviour? Or specific to breed, in that some breeds do not call as much and others more? Confounding that is that I do not know what the environment in Queenie's tribe was - whether anyone was laying or not, or if she observed it used in any other situation.

I truly believe that mine are not smart enough to understand how nice they have it inside. I have not given them the choice. I am going to be a parent today and keep them in. I may weaken and let them out for a little bit at the end of the day.

As proof that I am doing the right thing, I just watched Phyllis have a preening and sunbathing session on the porch. If I had let them out she would be stuck with the rest of them over under the apple trees in the shade. Fluffed out and huddled up.

I am saying this to you Lilly, it makes no sense.

My chickens are chicken... they would much rather stay inside when the weather is even slightly bad. And their “coops” are much more bare bones/less comfy than most people have on here. Mine are really meant as an overnight predator proof shelter and that’s it.

Same here, yesterday we had snow, and they walked out once for 2 seconds, and walked right back in.

Oh my gosh, those balls are hilariously cute. Do they like them? Sorry if I’m being a dolt, but what is their purpose?

We have a Cooper's hawk that is hanging around right now, and we have ferrell cats. Had one get one of my Heritage RID'S once. . Thinking they would be safe in one? And, no scratching the lawn. Oh, for those of you that left a surprise face on my post on that...they don't eat..all..of the green... thinking it just dries up fast on that side because we don't water it. Weeds and bugs for the chickens until then.

Yes, miss a single day here... and I am this far behind! For the record my phone prefers Collin over Chillin, and also disagrees completely on Cillin (but is ok with Arduinna? Or just can’t come up with a “sensible” alternative, more likely) getting the laptop running on my cell data is just too much of a PITA, so I’m getting better at correcting my Autocorrect by necessity!
