Full Production

I picked up 6 eggs on Saturday. I had not gotten them on Friday so I was expecting more than usual but 6 was surprising and the one on the left was super surprising.

Phyllis squatted for me yesterday. Such a sweetie. Having caught Hattie on the nest Saturday, this means everyone besides Lilly is now laying. That is full production for Fluffy Butt Acres.

There is corruption going on in my flock and this is the ring leader.

I'll tell you, that conniving hen has wrangled several of my girls who were faithfully laying in 2 nest spots to join her in playing the find the egg game. So far 2 of my Marans have joined her as well. I currently have 11 hens, 2 are not laying, that I know of. So that leaves the possibilities of 9 eggs today, I got 3 from the normal spots this morning. Thank you Holly, Butter and Clover. One of the Marans girls is in the process of laying in the normal spot right now. I heard the "egg song from one of the girls and decided to go check. It was coming from the hay stack, Momma hen was all tore up and giving me dirty looks as i peeked in and this is what I found.

See that suspicious look, she is up to something all right. I'm not there 30 seconds when i'm met with this.

Another sneaky look, and this was the girl that started the ruckus that brought me outside. So I grab my flashlight, and start looking around. Finally after about 5 minutes I find it.

This one was hid good and I'd walked over it several times. In my searching, Bunny hadn't moved a muscle, so I left them alone and walked just out of her sight. Give her about 2 minutes and peek in. No hen, then i hear movement and look.

Found you girl. She was smart, she went in where she'll have to walk back about 3 feet to get to the hidden nest. I'll leave the eggs alone until everyone has went to roost tonight then get them. But I think i'll leave Momma's alone, at least now I know where the nest is and wont have to search the hay pile daily looking for the new spot.
Love this story, with the pictures and the way you told it! Not to detract from this GREAT story but I have a request, please - can you name the chickens in the pictures for your future stories, work them into the text - who is who here? Just trying to get to know everyone's flocks. That's Momma Hen by the red bucket with her neck outstretched in the 3rd picture, and then that's her again at the end under the barn boards, correct? Such great pictures, you caught them very well! :love

Mugshot.... TRUMP with a tiny icicle on the tip of his beak 🤯

Sorry for the confusion. No, Momma Hen is my old game hen in the first picture. The one that started it all and if she had her way would be responsible for chicken over population. The one by the red bucket is I think Lola, and it's Bunny on the boards and peeking out from under them. I think mind you, those 2 are the twins of the Holly daughters. Their sister who I can tell apart is Granny, only reason she's able to be picked out easily is one of her tail feather's has a tiny bit of white on it. It's not ideal for a Marans to have white on their feathers as its called parasitic white, but, it can be caused by feather damage and it only showed up about 3 weeks ago. I'm watching her to see if it molts out or not. It could be caused by damage as Butter is very particular on who sleeps beside her. If Bumblebee is not next to her she'll peck, and sometimes viciously the interloper until they relocate. I have 8 Marans now after letting 2 of my youngest pullets go last week, and with everyone laying and looking like each other its one reason I leg banded them.
