Okay, so made it to page 200, still a long way to go, but I am determined to get caught up. I thought I'd take a break and introduce myself to everyone here and tell you about my chicken story.

My name is Cindi and I'm new to BYC. I stumbled upon the Fluffy Butt Acres thread last night and kept myself up most of the night reading the thread! I was so entertained reading about @BY Bob flock and I can't wait to see how everything turns out.

Anyways, let me get to my chicken story... I'm from Kauai, Hawaii. If any of you have ever been to Kauai, you know that this place is overrun with wild chickens - they are literally everywhere! Last May, I heard some cheeping coming from outside. I looked out my kitchen window and saw a little brown hen with 8 baby chicks in my front yard. I ended up going out onto my porch to feed them and was surprised that they didn't run away. They ended up visiting again the next day and the day after that and a few weeks later the mama hen moved into my backyard. I ended up naming her Chickadee.

After Chickadee's first group of chicks "left the nest", Chickadee went on to have two more sets of chicks. Her second batch of chicks hatched in late July 2020 and her third batch of chicks hatched on January 4, 2021!

Here is Chickadee with her first batch of chicks in May 2020. 6 of the 8 chicks made it to adulthood. Their names are: Sam, Peep, Daisy, Peapod, Twinkie & Twinkle.

Chickadee's first batch of chicks all grown up! Since they left the nest and went off on their own, I don't see them as much. Twinkie is the only one that still stops by daily.

Here is Chickadee with her second batch of chicks. This batch has 6 chicks, which consisted of 3 hens and 3 roosters. I've named them Roo, Pepper, Amos, Poppy, Cinnamon & Lulu. Poppy & Cinnamon still live in the backyard with Chickadee, but the others have moved to other parts of the neighborhood, but continue to visit my yard daily.

Here is Chickadee with her third batch of chicks. She had 10 chicks, 9 of them which are still here. They are currently 11 weeks old and I think that 7 of the 9 chicks are cockerels 🤯

Anyways, that's all I'm going to post for now. Someday I'll share more. But for now I wanted to introduce you all to Chickadee, the little brown hen that moved into my backyard and adopted me!
Aww, so lovely! I’m glad they think you’re a safe-space. :love

I just love this.:love
I guess you won't be posting about heritage breeds, or breeding to the SOP then.:p
Does Chicadee have a mate currenntly?
Do you provide a coop of any description for her?
Do you know where she nests?

This is very close to my ideal chicken management ideal. There are quite a few farms in the area where I live that have chickens living on the property. The property owners collect a few eggs from the nests they find and supply feed in return. Other than that the chickens are essentially feral. Many roost and nest in farm outhouses and some of the property owners at least will provide some sort of health care. Most of the cockerels get eaten. The better "keepers" pay attention to which cockerels and roosters are favoured by the hens. That's who governs the breeding stratagy; the hens.:D
I do hope you post lots, stories and pictures.

I don’t even know how to process what is supposed to be happening at 8am today. My small town name cropped per Bib’s sensible suggestion.
