Alpha chicken Alelle (aka mean-girl Alelle)

Yesterday I put out the flock block treat for the babies. It is seed and corn all compressed together in a 10 lb cube. (It looks quite yummy, and if it came in smaller bar sized portions I might be tempted to eat it myself)

Anyway, this thing is big and heavy and has PLENTY for my 7 not full sized girls to all have access at once.

Alelle disagrees with me on this.

She literally screamed at her sisters. Not a cluck. Not a peck. A scream. They all paused, and she started eating again and they cautiously resumed with a little buffer space from her.

This meant that poor Piscia (lowest of the low in pecking order) got booted from front row feeding. Poor Piscia had to circle around the back, picking up scraps the others tossed aside.
She made the mistake of getting too close to Allele...and Allele let her know the displeasure it caused her by pecking Piscia.

Piscia relented immediately and ran to the opposite side of the treat, head down low so she wouldn't be noticed and ate some goodies in a hidden manner.

This also was not Allele approved, and she rushed at Piscia to shoo her away. Never mind the 5 other chickens she ignored to peck at Piscia.

This went on for 10 minutes. Allele was totally okay with everyone else eating, but Piscia? Nope! Not allowed!

I didn't interfere (no one hurt, enough food for everyone) , but I hate this part of having a flock. Especially when Piscia is my favorite.

Is it strange that, doing a bit of research today on light and speckled Sussex hens, that they seem to be different in body shape/size in all pics/videos?
Snow seems spot on for a light (massive and broad) but the speckled all seem like Belle (bit smaller, leaner, not as fluffy etc)
I thought Belle was a mix because she wasn’t the same as Snow but maybe she’s just being her best speckledness 🤷🏻‍♀️
Just a musing 🤭

I've spent countless hours trying to figure out breeds (unsuccessfully).
I will say yours look like perfect specimens to me 🥰🥰
That is because they are beautiful chickens and I don't care the breed 😊

Poor Picia, the gleaming black beauty 💜
It is a tough part of having chooks

This is true. They are healthy and happy and I think pretty.
I have had a small cold so I was YouTubing today in my pj’s and of course ended up watching chicken videos (and roosters crowing just so me and Vi could get a giggle at some of the zany roosters out there) 😂

It can be very hard to watch. I have seen Sansa just chase Sydney and/or Phyllis when there are no treats involved, I suppose it is "Just Because". That is why I try make certain that Sydney and Sansa get their share of treats. I feel I should balance it a little. Sometimes that means a special feeding for them separate from the others.
