No, there was a shovel involved too, it used to be big clumps of razor grass, I think I showed pics of it all covered in cardboard a few months ago. They helped a lot though, and they are in charge of leveling and mixing in the compost when I get it in the next few weeks.

Hazel did this a few days ago, emerged from the nestbox and THEN did the motions of making a nest! Before she goes in she doesn't do it.
But it does look like throwing laurels on oneself after a feat, and why not? They deserve it!

Mine only do this when broody and I make them come off the nest.

I am amazed, how tame my chickens are. Every one of them, love to be petted, and sit on or near me, as close as they can.

Hubby and I were enjoying the garden this morning when I noticed Edwina stalking across the grass picking up twigs and leaves and tossing some of them over her shoulder.

Sure enough, there was an egg in the nest box.

She is looking great! I am glad she has the egg-laying thing down because the same cannot be said of her nest building!

Aurora does this, I just don't understand why?

It reminds me of when I'm looking for the scissors and wander through the house making vague scissor movements with my fingers.
