Do new hens start out laying smaller eggs than regular "medium, or large "? Does ANYBODY know the answer? My five new BR's are laying now (but are the same size as my five year old "Rocks-Ann" but their eggs are small?:idunno
I believe that is typically the case. Eggs get larger as they age.

They may get bigger, my girls start out smaller but normally within a month have gotten bigger. It's also the same after a molt or when they come back into lay after being broody. Henrietta is back to laying, actually started laying again when her chicks were 2 days old which is why I think she ended up rejecting them. These eggs are about 1/3 the size smaller then what she normally lays.

Desperate to get to that Nesting Box. It is that much better.

I could not let Phyllis go any longer. She was not coming off of the nest at all. I find it scary right now so I will intervene.
I think you've done the right thing. I'll be relieved when those chicks arrive & she can get on with the business of being a mama.

Phyllis Update

I took Phyllis off of the nest and got was she mad. She pecked me several times. From the amount of poo she dumped, she definitely had not left the nest.

Here she is just off the nest.

And then, more important than eating, the dust bath!

When I took her off the nest, Hattie was in box 2 to look at her egg. With Phyllis gone, Hattie was frantic to get in and lay her egg in the best nest box.

She was off the nest at least an hour. During that time Aurora went in the side door and tried to lay in her nest. Then Phyllis returned and I closed her back in.

What a good girl 🥰
And Hattie 😋 that gave me a laugh.

what was your truck for uploading the videos so they have thumbnails and aren’t shorts again?

You shouldn't feel too bad about Phyllis, Bob.
Remember my 2 angry little pinecones? They were happy to brood together & share the eggs but neither would get off the nest & leave all those lovely eggs to the other! 🙄 :gig
