Yeah we have Russian olive tree's too, they are a little pokey, but we don't have any in our chicken yard. They love the shade/shelter of the Russian olives....getting them out when they prove stubborn (or lost in the case of thing 2).....‍♀
Because of your insights, I've made changes too (even if just mental) and I'm still a year behind. Had Rusty up bythe house sounding like a hen with escort call, then realized it was an echo of call by the coop. that was Silver, the lead, asking for help evicting the neighbor's cat from the olive trees. as the cat isn't intimidated by chickens, Rusty came up to the house to carry the call so I could go out with the hose to encourage it away. That makes me very pleased. I write so much stuff about chicken behavior, what with the articles and stories hoping to encourage people to make even small changes to their view of the chicken and their keeping arrangements. I've been horrified by what I've seen as coops and runs on this site. I appreciate that some people have to keep their chickens contained but a lot can be done in a run with a bit of imagination and not a lot of expense.
No yard....just coop (was here when we bought the place), hillside, and overgrown trees. House in the pic is the closest neighbors who like to shell peanuts for the chickens when they visit. Also have to leave the door open at the moment. Mama won't let anyone in through their hatch. Not sure how things will go when dusk fallsYeah we have Russian olive tree's too, they are a little pokey, but we don't have any in our chicken yard.
It's a lovely place for them! We have a very large yard for our flock! We used to let them roam our whole property, but there are packs of dogs that come through and kill them, so we had to create a safe enclosed area for them!No yard....just coop (was here when we bought the place), hillside, and overgrown trees. I found a locust in the run and Hattie and Lilly shared it. Lilly got the head and wings.
