Ok, while we’re supporting each other in Bob’s absence, I just wanted to share I’m feeling an incredible amount of remorse, regret and guilt for not trying harder with Dorothy. I don’t mean the day she got sick; I mean before that. She was laying soft eggs for a long time and I stopped trying to help since it didn’t seem to be working. Could have put her on hormones. Ugh. Poor, poor Dorothy with the lousy genetics, if that was her problem.💔
No. Do not go there. We all do the best we can with the knowledge we have. As @BY Bob is always pointing out to me when I lose a chicken, they are experts @ hiding illness & symptoms & by the time we realise it's serious it's already too late. You did what you could & nobody can expect more. She had a wonderful life with you & we all know that breeding has caused enormous distress in some breeds & there is just nothing to be done about that. It is not our fault. I have resolved to the best of my ability not to perpetuate the horror by knowingly buying birds prone to genetic issues. I did it once. Never again. I lost an entire flock of 12 birds in a matter of days.

Thanks, Ribh. Yes, Dorothy likely had poor genetics, but I could have done more. Look at all I’ve done for Ruby. But Ruby has incredibly strong fight in her.

We could all do more ~ & it is so easy to be wise in retrospect. Focus on the positives. Think what her life could have been if not for you. Sooo much better with you. :hugs

I agree with this.
And really @micstrachan please don’t go there. You are an amazing chicken mom.
It is so easy to feel guilt but you need to focus on all you have done not what maybe you didn’t do.
She had a lovely chickeny life with you.
:hugs

Sylvie is Gone

Phyllis is still keeping her warm. I noticed that Phyllis was not moving around this morning and when I checked the chick was dead.

I assume i need to take the body from her but I thought I'd check and see if it is better if she leaves it on her own.
:hit:hit:hit

I'm so sorry.
