I just love this photo!
I never considered that.It could have been theother chickens. There are no signs of an intruder.![]()
Correct if they are not laying there is nothing to sell and no profits.Probably coincides with 1st adult moult also. And as they're living in a stressful environment, the odds of them ceasing laying during moult are greatly increased. rather than deal, they get rid.
The little bantam ceramas? They're very cool looking. A little like @featherhead007 's Jaffar! Are they cold-tolerant for where you are? Have you raised them before?Everyone! Im freaking out. I think were getting a dozen or so serema chicken eggs To incubate and hatch! jeez! This is awesome.
Yes I am. Tax please.Bob taxes everything. He's a picture hog.![]()

I am just loving and appreciating your observations, @RebeccaBoyd ! I feel as if I am there, it is so easy to visualize things, and I feel your care and kindness. Thank you!I 100% agree with this. I love my chickens, but even from a small child I've been drawn to and had the deeper connections to my Roosters. There is just something about them that speaks to me. Right now, if it wasn't for every family member now hooked on fresh eggs, I could easily switch over and set up a safe haven for boys and not own another hen. And who knows, one day when Rosie's gone and it is just me I may just do that. I do love my girls though, and will do anything for them, but, think about it. The girls are busybodies, often hormonal, love to complain and while they will come for a lap visit they have other important chicken things to do to stay for longer then 5 minutes. My boys, when they come for a lap visit, if I let them they crash in your lap for a hour or more. Basil has stepped up and impresses me daily with he new job as top rooster. He's gentle with the hens, even more so then drumstick, wonderful with the baby chicks. Leads every hen laying to their nest spot and watches over them while they lay, and if multiple girls are laying at the same time, he runs back and forth between them. I think Blueberry is thinking about laying soon as she's started following him around and he's showing her every good nest site. Bubba is now showing some of the same behaviors that Basil did towards Drumstick. He's starting to hang back and watch and imitate when he's not looking. Branch, well, he runs freely between both of them, Basil pays him no mind at all. I wonder if due to his small size that he see's him as a young chick still?
Sorry for your loss. They're called gentle giants for a reason. Rusty would walk up, look at me, then go about tending the flock. He paced circles around the coop when the babies were in it, alerting to EVERY magpie (or larger bird) in existence. He did the same when Mama was broody, then alerted for even smaller birds. I was sitting out there when a little bitty kestrel dropped in between the trees. Rusty alerted before it was through the trees.
I had 1 giant hen in the group that got snatched by the foxes in May. She was the most laid back hen I've ever seen. Calm, unflappable, chill. Could help settle the roadrunners.
Yes, that.I am just loving and appreciating your observations, @RebeccaBoyd ! I feel as if I am there, it is so easy to visualize things, and I feel your care and kindness. Thank you!
Agreed! That's bad. I couldn't believe they got Robert Llewellyn to reprise his role. And Jane Leeves. I bet she is super glad that it was not picked up.
Thanks so much for sharing that.
