Maggie’s therapy
I am working on what I can do something about with Maggie. If she either had leg weakness caused by some deficiency (probably from not eating commercial food) or something like a stroke, then physical therapy might help.
So I rigged up a sure fire Maggie physio mechanism.
Here you see her balancing on a log and standing on tippy toe while reaching up high. I think she is doing rather well.
She will do pretty much anything for an ear of corn!
Good thinking! I love it! So creative!

I am at a bit of a loss on Maggie and roosting.
In spite of two days of near perfect balance she is still going to bed in a nest box. Here she is demonstrating her perfect balance by going up to the upper level boxes.
Should I let her decide on her own when she is well enough to roost again? Or should I block her access to encourage her to roost? I could of course also haul her out at night and put her up there.
I am not sure what is best really.

This is going to seem very inconsistent of me but by not putting her back that first night I think you now need her to let her make her own decision to go back to the roost. She may have decided it's warmer there.

I stopped trying to put Hattie back on the roost a long time ago. While she roosts most of the summer, most of the winter she sleeps on the coop floor so she can get up and eat in the dark when she is hungry.

And mine for example. How did they compare? How about Daisy's? (The greatest hen ever)

Oh my, she hasn’t any!!
Ok, so maybe not so unique 😅
I love as my time goes on living with my feathered girls I notice more, things I sadly didn’t observe much at all with my ISA’s because I had no comparison of other breeds.
They bring me so much joy I can’t imagine life without them. I was leaning towards no more chooks after Penny and Bok because Penny’s loss brought so much heartache. Then Bok was all alone and I got the Sussex sisters to keep her company and now I can’t believe I was considering not having them at all.
What a fool I was ☺️

Run Hattie Run

Saturday evening I let the tribe out for some free range. Aurora led Sansa and Sydney over to the apple trees while Hattie, Lilly, and Phyllis stayed at the magnolia tree to eat some pasta.

Watch as Hattie and Lilly run across the "open" ground and Phyllis requires escort.

Rather sad.
