Ok - question: my chicks are 11 weeks old, I figure the two hens will start laying around 18 - 20 weeks, so that would be spring; will they hold off to start laying do you think? Does anyone have experience with late season chicks?
I have never had chicks this late. My guess would be that they would hold off laying.

Goodbye to a Friend

Today I said goodbye to another friend. This time in the pouring rain. The rest of the tribe watched from the open door to the complex wishing it would stop so they could come out and enjoy the yard but alas it did not.

She is buried next to Patsy. Both of Lilly's friends together. Someday Lilly will join them but hopefully not for a long time yet.

Goodbye my friend, rest in peace.

Because there was no real free ranging today, I hung out with them in the run. I can't really tell what if any changes are happening in the tribe as a result of their loss. Once i see any I will share.

Sydney did spend some in the Cluckle Hut today.

she was a beautiful looking bird and I know she could be a bit mean to others but I at least will miss her in your tribe.

So will I.

I remember how kind Bob was when he decided not to break up a trio and brought her home with Sydney and Phyllis. She was a little firecracker: beautiful but dangerous (for a chicken).

Bob, I hope this doesn't come across as tone deaf, but I think the cluckle hut is one of the best gifts you've given your flock. They'll make better use of it in time. It's really made me think about providing two options for roosting as the flock expands over time.

I don’t know what to do :idunno:thBeetov-Hen hears Jaffar outside crowing. She perks up a bit, but I don’t want to take her outside, if she’s contagious I don’t want to lose more birds because of her. She’s eating a bit, but not drinking. And hasn’t touched her yogurt:( I can’t tell lethargy from contentment. (But I do know, that she’s not feeling well) After Six years, you would think that I could figure her out. Not this time!

I already miss her little honk. To her credit, she was mean to others but very kind to me. I will really miss her pecking my leg for secret walnuts.

And I am sorry to hog this thread, I know others have important things to say as well. It is just that my hen is right here in front of me and you people are not. And she’s my best chicken. :hit
