I know that personally, I am very willing to learn what is more natural for them when they go broody so I can try to accommodate that as close as I can in their current environment. The thing is that I have no experience or information to draw from. Thats why I appreciate rants and advice so I can learn what is more natural.

What I do is based on inexperience and ignorance, not because I want to, but because I don't know any better. I want to learn and grow so I can be a better steward of those I've decided to care for.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are people willing to learn and do better but they just need the right information and have it be accessible.

(I know this is from forever ago, but I'm catching up. Page 1088 of 7500+, but I will get there!)
But I am going to guess that Shad's experience with broody hens may be at least partly due to his being his tribes' Bucket Boy, and nesting in his kitchen, in the Big Coop, where he provided a suitable raised nest platform and straw, is by far the safest choice a hen could make.

Changes in Color

Lilly is finally starting to wrap up her molt and I am seeing more changes than usual in her coloring. The gold that was a little bit around the front of her neck has now migrated down to her shoulders.

I am also starting to see some golden feather stems as well. Circled in the picture below.

I see differences in almost every hen after their molt. I find it interesting how they change a little each year.

Yes, Patricia's last molt turned her almost completely white.

Well, the nasty white stuff is here. Started snowing about 30 minutes ago. Roads everywhere are shut down and the Hospital has already tried calling my sister in. She told them to try and find someone else as she does not think she can make it. They gave her notice that if they could not get someone they will call her back in a hour and send the sheriff out to get her. This is my backyard currently, supposed to get 8 to 10 inches, if it keeps going, I think we'll hit it.

It's very pretty against the black.

New Location

Sydney is nest hunting. She built a new nest for today's egg just inside the entrance to the Cluckle Hut and did not use the nest box.

Phyllis showed it to me so I knew about it. She pointed the egg out to me itself.

I would love to leave an egg in the nest for Sydney but it would freeze at night and then thaw during the day and it would be a real mess.

I need to get new brown ceramic eggs. Everyone who watched my chickens last year took the ceramic ones with them and I think they are too embarrassed to tell me. I am down to 1 white and 1 green from at least 4 of them last year.
I seem to recall that happened the year before that as well! Can you imagine trying to crack a ceramic egg into a ceramic bowl? The bowl would chip.
