I'm so happy to hear that. I know how thrilled you must be. That Maggie is a tough bird. She does not give up easily.Hello Fluffy Butt peeps. I have been quite sick the last few days and barely able to drag myself out of bed to care for the critters.
Think I am maybe turning the corner now. Just dropping in to say big news. Maggie has decided to start roosting again.
I missed it all because of being out of it but there she is this morning between Diana and Dotty on the big roost.
I am happy about that.
Minnie is still roosting alone but she is perky and laying eggs so I can’t put that down to sickness. Just bloody mindedness!
That is why I mark mine with a tiny ‘x’ in the hope they don’t notice! But then the chickens will know! Their eggs come out with no writing on them.![]()
I put a black dot on them last time to know avail. That is why I mark mine with a tiny ‘x’ in the hope they don’t notice!
Good news on all fronts, even Minnie, who must be satisfying something, roosting over there. Here's to your continuing recovery, being so sick is tough. There is flu going around too. Did you get a covid test to rule that out?Hello Fluffy Butt peeps. I have been quite sick the last few days and barely able to drag myself out of bed to care for the critters.

I actually wondered about that, before I could tell them apart by weight - the ones I got are pretty substantial - I marked them, and put just a big dot on one end!But then the chickens will know! Their eggs come out with no writing on them.![]()
Right. -40 is -40 on both scales. I've experienced -35F. Once you hit -anything F (@ -18C), it all starts feeling the same. Only question is how quickly frostbite can set in. Had around a foot (30cm) of snow (powder) get dumped over the last week (most in the last couple of days). Birds don't want to leave the coop, temps in single digits +/-0F. Been "plowing" tracks with my boots for the critters to get around with. The cat is already using those. Last night, temps were up to @15F (-10C). This morning, thermometer is reading 39F. ??? How?Well it had to happen, winter has arrived unfortunately. And my chickies are not pleased with the cold, I told them be happy they were not in Alberta where it is around -40C, after all -18C isn't really that cold..... Right?
Beautiful pink sky. I do love Sidney's barring pattern back there!!
Collect frequently, plan on losing plenty to freeze. Fwi, a crock pot set on warm keeps the water from freezing and costs substantially less than a heated waterer.Just saw it go to -19C.
My water jugs for the chickens was frozen in the barn this morning. I told them to eat their porridge fast before it froze also!
I am new to winter chickens I guess I will need to get one of those heated waterers.
How does everyone deal with not having eggs freeze?
