The attack site was under the magnolia tree which was their refuge from the Red Tailed Hawks which were their previous top predator. They do still go under the magnolia tree and even stopped to groom there today.

The Cooper's Hawk is so much more dangerous than the Red Tailed Hawk even though it is smaller.
What about some netting around the base of the magnnolia then at least it couldn't drop down on them without getting tangled.

I have come to the conclusion that it's the laces on winter boots he has an issue with; my cousin was over last night and her boot are all laced up the front like two pairs of mine. Pangoo took great exception to her boots attacking them with gusto!
Solution: gaitors over the boots. Covers the laces. Run out and test this.......waiting........;)

It cleared up and he was well on the mend, but the heatwave this summer, his Meat Bird Genetics, and a little additional stress from Sammy and their feud were too much for his heart. He put his girls to bed one night and then had a presumed heart attack (based on his comb).
I am sorry to see the end if Roostie. He was quite a survivor and had a good life I think.

This afternoon, I bought a treadle feeder in a different design which I'm really looking forward to. It has a pin to lock it shut at night to keep pests out, and a pin to gradually adjust the opening until the hens are no longer concerned about stepping up and the pin can be removed (or something like that). I also like the deep tray and grill to stop pellets getting flicked out (I'm looking at you Ivy).

Seems your hens learned very quickly! Did you put treats in there at first? I'm planning to put tomato, cheese and lettuce in there on the first day.
I am keen to see how it works MJ. Hoping you will keep us informed - who learns first etc. with pics!

Yes, that's how FB's design and algorithms work. It drives dependency. Eyes on screens is one of the products they sell to their customers.
I am obviously missing something. I have never found anything interesting to look at on Facebook.
Many of the farms around here don’t have websites just Facebook pages and I can’t find any useful information there like products or prices or availability. So I end up just picking up the phone.
I am just not that interested in photos of some random visitor’s kid in muddy boots when all I am trying to do is find bacon that is ethically raised and slaughtered.
I honestly don’t get it.

Somehow, you have escaped their profiling! This is a great thing! Let's not question it.
