Well I made it a week with a relatively clean brooder using only newspaper. Add 6 more and that method is now thrown out the window. It is time to go to the best set up I found last year and bring in the sawdust. I already cleaned it once and in 2 hours it looks like the hooligans threw a frat party.

The sawdust lining is already a big hit. I really expect that within the hour they will break out into their first dustbathing session.
Ummm. Pictures? Where do you source sawdust? I have only ever seen shavings and horse pellets (also sold as pine cat litter).

There are 4 different saw mills in a 50 mile radius from where I live. We have a guy who will deliver a dump truck load for 125 a load. I use it for the stalls, chicken coop and I found out last year it was the best bedding for the brooder as well. I tried shavings and I could still smell the brooder. I get zero smelly brooders with the sawdust. I love my sawdust guy, he is the one who gave me the 6 cochin girls last September.

Oh yes, I remember you telling us about him. Nice!

I find all of this fascinating. Do you maintain breeding charts? I assume a lot of what you do is intentional but there must be happy accidents too, right?
Mostly the tribes are pretty monogamous with their Boys, but sometimes something interesting happens… curvy girl offspring photos coming later tonight (sorry for living so far west!) today is Coop cleaning day and I’m just over halfway done and racing the coming wet weather.

Exactly! Ivy must be very worried at this point. 😬
Things are changing for Ivy. A moment ago she found a bug and ran off with it, pursued by Mary. She came to a screeching halt and ate the bug, and then ... Mary didn't chastise her.

Perhaps it's because Janet is ageing, perhaps it's because Ivy sat on eggs :idunno something else entirely?

Here you go Royalchick, some pictures of happy chicks with their new bedding. Oh and while right now the Buffs are all being called Nellie, and the other called Granny, once mom can distinguish them some more she is letting Rosie name the other 4 whatever she wants. I dread hearing what she comes up with, but she is determined one of them is Wasabi. One way or another she is getting her Wasabi this year.

Very cute!
I am with Rosie - I think Wasabi is a great name for a chicken.
