Going up 11cents overnight, again wanted to fill up before that. They are saying over $2/litre shortly...

It's irritating as I know exactly how much oil Canada has, far more than the middle East, but politics limits our mining it and we have serious pipeline/storage capacity.

Hopefully more pipelines will be planned, hopefully I will be working for the next several years flat out!

I can't wait till they can get out there again they love that tree, and the soil sandy here so great for dust baths.

The new run will incorporate that tree and a few others , stii trying to figure out how to put a cover on it and netting, with the tree in the way....

It’s possible. I wrapped the cover around the tree in my run.

I've seen this awful vision and my girl is laying the membrane with egg, nothing like this lash egg. I may get her inside tomorrow so I can observe this better I the morning. She is not losing weight and looks healthy for now. It's just she wants to be alone in the morning for a while, her back end improved today.

Tina on the other hand is very alert and into everything she tried too get to next doors garden today by digging under the fence she's a true rebel.
Agatha has had six good months here but as I said before she was a prisoner for longer this charity must have known she was much older but didn't inform me. I'm really disappointed in how this happened. I would have kept her anyway but being forewarned would have been more a lot acceptable. :(
:hugsYou’re doing the best thing you can for her… she’s happy, she’s outside chickening, it’s wonderful, and no lash eggs is really good news, with her breed it is something to watch for closely, and internal laying… which is less immediately apparent. We have had this breed of hens live 4-5 years here before, assuming she was 2 when you got her rather than being put into the pet food stream or such, you could still have several happy years together. And she looks quite healthy and happy from what I see. I am also sorry you didn’t know more what you might be getting into with the ex battery rescue… these charities and groups really should be fully informing everyone looking to adopt what they will be facing. Yes, there’s the joy of helping the animal, and the inevitable heartbreak of the medical complications that are almost unavoidable with them. It’s frustrating.

The only reason I would want shells on the eggs would be to make them easier for her to pass, if she is a little down in the mornings this may be why. One of Chickie Hawk’s daughters was laying a soft egg, and I finally caught the specific girl in the act, it is quite a struggle and she wasn’t in a great way. If I had been a predator rather than a helper she would have been dinner and she knew it when I snatched her up and brought her into the human coop to help. It was a grainy, rough membrane, oddly shaped, and partially stuck. I had to help her pass it and then she seemed fine, got her pink scrambled egg treat, and back to the coop and on the roost. She was quite relieved. She also now has an identifying leg band, and hasn’t had a problem since. With 8 very similar looking hens in the one run the band helps me monitor her a little more closely.

As to rescues, I only seem to receive these hens in their last 6 months of life, aside from when I just “relocated” all of the farms hens (with semi permission). There are still two girls left from the 2018 purchase of point of lay commercial hens, one Columbia Rock and one red production. A lot of them I actually have for only their last two or three days. Some I have just comforted on the trip up to my trailer, some I’ve given painkillers for a day or two waiting for some sign of hope. It’s incredibly hard work emotionally. The little kid no longer lives here, so I likely won’t be receiving anymore “sick chicken emergency” calls. I’ve literally been “caught” going into the coop or coming out of it to the declaration of “oh, is that another dead chicken” when the poor girl is still barley alive. They won’t help them pass on, and don’t seem to care if the girl is dying in the corner slowly. It makes me sad, and angry, and all I can do is my best to ease some of the suffering.

News From the Range

Lets start with proof that it is Spring. A Robin in the magnolia tree.

Song birds are back in force. There is lots of pleasant singing in the yard.

Does this mean the hawk has moved on? There has been no sign of it for weeks. Could we be that lucky?

Continuing on with the news......

Our latest story concerns the Iron Beak. Imagine how excited I was when I caught her pooping this out. Hers is in the circle. I don't know whose the other was.

Based upon that, I am ready to pronounce her cured. I do want to weigh her to see if she is back down to normal for her.

In sports today, we have video of everyone enjoying a nutritious snack of eggs and rice, except Betty. Watch her sprint over when I call her.

A very beautiful poop picture! So happy for you both… 😂 on the list of things I would never have though I would say five years ago, that ranks in the top five for sure!
