I have been following this on the APHIS site. There are very few cases in NJ (all ducks at Cape May) and only one in PA (dead bald eagle). None in commercial or backyard flocks in either state.
But it feels to me like that may be because if less aggressive sampling and monitoring. It is inconceivable to me that it is rife both to the North and to the South and just skip our two states.
Of course there is not much that can be done. I want to get the pool up and running before the ducks try and nest in it like last year as they are an important carrier, but beyond that just hope for the best.
It is very scary.
Yes it could very well be a monitoring thing.

I was watching my gang take off across the paddock running along as a bunch of Robins also were out there - I was freaking out as I am trying to keep them contained !! Bad birdies!

Was able to keep some of the ladies inside - they were sunning themselves and I wanted to join them haha🤗

Goodness it feels like the brooder is getting too small for the Hooligans. They have discovered that if they run fast enough and flap hard enough their little wings will lift their feet off the ground.

Bella in particular has mastered doing this deliberately rather than by accident. Bella was practicing flapping from day one and it is paying off. But the brooder is only 29” in each direction which seems not quite enough for flying. When I move them to the brooder box in the coop they will have 36+ inches. But that still feels small!

I am not sure whether to try and make something bigger or just wait until they are big enough to be free roaming in the Chicken Palace.

I don’t remember this being an issue with the Roadrunners. Maybe because there was only two of them.

Of course they are not always flying. Sometimes they take a rest and pretend to look grown-up. And sometimes they can barely keep their eyes open!

I can hear it now “flight ….. this is tower, you are cleared for runway 2A, Happy flying!”
