A little sad and exciting news. I lost a more or less fully developed chick this morning. White and beautiful, from a green egg. I think mama crushed the egg accidentally in her excitement to get out… so there are 8 eggs left, with questionable fertility, but I expect to have babies in the next couple of days. My Girl came out and dropped a giant broody poop, drank a lot, stuffed herself more than usual, and has settled back on her nest, hopefully for the next few days and a few successful chicks at least.
Oh dear sorry to hear that Kris... That was my big worry with Henny Penny last year. I was so paranoid I ended up lifting her off and on the nest so she wouldn't do that.

Everyone scoffed at me but hey, I am a very paranoid person where chickens are concerned!

That’s sad Kris, I’m sorry to hear that. :hugs

Thanks PP! The cats also have a duck walk out in their run so they’re really useful. I’m a bit worried about my big girl Tegan though; she’s really too heavy to be jumping down from anywhere. I’m going to put a tarp down in lieu of a poop board and I was thinking of putting a breeze block under it and padding it with towel for her to roost on. She’s one of my naughty girls who sleeps in the nest boxes, so I can’t see her fighting for a position on the top roost.
I have come to terms with Fluffy McNugget sleeping in her nest box 😊.

She has me well trained hahaha, now I just clean it out every morning.

Yep… try it with 13 cows and their yearlings all clustered and pushing around a bale in the yard and dozens of the little feather brains thinking between the hooves is a fine place to snack! 🤦‍♀️ I swear the worry over these chooks is taking years off my lifespan and giving me greys… and yet I haven’t had a single stepping on injury from a cow yet, so it can’t be that bad… just fit to give me a heart attack.
I only worry about the silkies, they can't fly worth 💩, and a wee bit slow.... Not to mention those fluffy top-knots blocking vision!

I both dread and look forward to when she is grown. Being my only child a selfish part of me wants her to stay here forever. The rest of me cannot wait to see her thrive. She has big plans, and is working hard to meet those goals. If she continues down the path to her dream career she will leave this area. Wherever she ends up she will never be a city girl. Her love for fishing/hunting and owning farm animals is deeply ingrained. She is already plotting on how to take Dirt to college with her. Dirt is mom and dad's horse, but she has it in her head that they are just breaking him for her for when Russ is ready to retire and be a pasture pet. She has not been on him yet, but, truthfully, dad mentioned that he is almost ready for her to try him out in the ring. We have not told her yet, because, we all know that once she gets on him, she's liable to never let anyone else ride him. Rosie and dad already fight over the many saddles, he is not ready to fight over his horse as well.
I love your stories I had to read this one again 🙂

You should really write short stories 💖

The heart was for the general behavior of your girl...she is ready to sit on the remaining eggs & become a Momma! She probably won't break anymore since she will just keep them still & warm... Sorry one didn't make it...but I'm hopeful that most of the remaining 8 eggs will hatch.

Did you ever candle to be sure they were fertile/developing at any point? Was curious as to why 'questionable fertility'. Here's :fl that you get at least 4...but 6 would be awesome!!

Questionable fertility because I just randomly gave her some good looking eggs. She had two false starts but she’s a trooper, and once she has her babies nothing can faze her… lol. She’s my girl that attacked the hawk for swooping on her very mature babies last year. She’s one of my best mamas and broodies, but does get fully off the nest every day to eat drink and poop. Until the last few days, which is about where we are now. I probably should have written the date down, but, two false starts. Most of the eggs she is on are quite dark, either olive or brown, and I don’t want to disturb her prematurely
