Cheep tweet tweet.......

You have got to be kidding...

Noooooo you're early you are not supposed to be arriving till next weekend!

Barn swallows.. fuddle duddle

Of course their cheerful twittering set the hens all growling, and then 'flewp, flewp, flewp'.... Three swallows barrelled down the alleyway of the barn, in the west side door and out the east side door, sending my hens all ducking and growling.

It was actually quite hilarious 😆

But it is a serious dilemma for me, what with avian flu in the province. For 30 odd years the swallows have been coming here nesting. They are a bit (ok more than a bit) messy but their antics rival that of the hens.

And I wasn't expecting them till another week... Which means two things: 1) I need to call the Ministry of Agriculture and get the scoop on how much risk swallows pose, and 2) I now really need to fix the back barn door.

Guess I best get to it and fix the darn door, at least it's mild today! Yes it did warn up from this morning.

Oh the reason I need to fix the door is so the swallows can get in and the hens can't get out. And the horses can't get into the barn....

Good morning everyone. As soon I drink my 2nd cup of coffee and it kicks in I'm running away for a few hours. Well, not running away really, but me and my neighbor are going out mushroom hunting. I hope we find some Morels, but more importantly it will be just me, another adult and no children or forgive me for saying it grandma for about 3 hours. My dogs are allowed to come to keep a lookout for snakes.

Bernadette has informed me in no uncertain terms that she is not a special needs chicken. Therapy has stopped and she has resumed scary daredevil antics (like trying to fly up to the rafters).
She does sometimes stop and sort of move her left foot around like it aches a bit - but she is using it fully normally as far as I can tell.
Here is a poor quality and uninteresting screen grab of her - I saved it to send to the vet because it shows what I think is completely normal leg position. The ‘bad’ leg is the one nearest the camera.

I'm soo happy she has recovered. It is amazing how being so young helped her do it so much quicker. She is a fighter like Butter was. Watch out, that determination can one day land her the head hen spot. It did for my Butter.

After breakfast a little preening party and a nap.
Did I mention I was besotted?

They are all so adorable, your little black one, and for the life of me I cannot remember her name right now, is growing up like I thought she would. By August, you are going to have a stunning black hen on your hands.

Is there any way to rig it up so the hens aren’t scratching around in the swallow poop?
