I'm guessing some animals and humans prefer to be alone until there is someone they can feel comfortable with.It's also a challenge to ensure lower rank animals receive proper socialization - I have found that some prefer smaller groups rather than larger ones. This can also be found with other animals including humans.
Being alone is not necessarily being lonely. It's a better choice IMO
