I liked your idea of something temporary just to see if indeed that helps address the problem and is less drastic than shaving her head!
I assumed you meant something like this:

Or maybe like one of these

Yes, thats it! Even a barrette or a gentle roller clip your wife may have about. Assuming that it doesn't bother her overmuch, then you would know if the head feathers are indeed responsible for her behavior or something else.

Roller clips: these look harsh but aren’t and they are flat inside no teeth.

Let me know how that works out!

Much to the distress of the Princesses I sat out in their field listening to the hawk and playing recordings of hawks from the Cornell website.
We have a match.
It is a Juvenile Red Tailed Hawk.
I didn’t see him/her but the cry is an exact match.
It seems to be setting up house in the area. Grrr.
In good news all the chickens recognize the call and stay under cover.
In a split second, that hawk could remove one of your babies, and you would stand there in shock watching your bird be killed. Horrible though, so be extra careful with a predator around’ :fl

I know. I don't know what else I can do though. I have lots of shrubs and furniture and umbrellas and a roofed run for them to hide in. They certainly seem to stay under their roof when they hear the hawk.
Fortunately the hawk is being bullied by the Mocking Birds (or are they Grey Catbirds?) and I am grateful that they are providing such a good distraction.

It is 95F/35C in the shade. The human servant is getting heat stroke as she runs back and forth with ice for the waterers.
She has opened a patio umbrella to create extra shade to supplement the trees, shrubs, and roofed parts of the run.
So what is a poor chicken to do?

Oh good. I am never sure how to hide the picture. She is a tad nutso that one (personal opinion)!

Maybe try playing recordings of bald or golden eagles screaming when the hawk is around. The juvie may decide those birds are around and leave the area...?

That is a special picture - the contrast with the green and all the different designs on the hens. Submit it for POW or calendar or something. It is very lovely.
