Phyllis

Phyllis is still broody. I need to break her soon. We are now in the 30s as a total number of days on the nest.

i was very excited to see her come out this morning while I was visiting with everyone. I do miss her greatly.

Of course I was glad to see her until she dropped that broody poop on my footstool! That's bad form Phyllis. :sick

I did take the opportunity of her being off the nest to go see what she was sitting on. Last I knew she was on 2 fake eggs. Here is what I found.

Yup its been a while since I looked. 🤦‍♂️

I think I found where Betty has been laying.

Out of 20 eggs, 14 are Betty's, 4 seem to be Aurora's, 2 are fake.

I took about 7 of Betty's eggs before Phyllis came storming back to the nest. I decided to leave the rest with her for now. Why not take them all and break her?

One hen started running in terror when Phyllis emerged from the nest.

The good news, Gucci was running, the bad news, it was ineffective. She was running in circles bukking is distress and still Phyllis caught her and gave her a thrashing.

We had been gone for 3 days. In those three days poor Gucci must have taken some abuse from Phyllis because she knew the sound of that broody lady emerging and it created panic. If I leave Phyllis on the nest one more week she will be out of circulation most of the time I have them locked in the complex when we go to a wedding out of state. That should help to limit the abuse that poor Gucci might have to endure. It is clear from today's poop that Phyllis is eating enough. She seems pretty healthy. I should probably weigh Phyllis tonight too be sure.

What does everyone else think?
I don't have much thoughts to your situation. I did think about playing pool at the second egg picture.

They were all hatched Aug 1st. We are still in the danger zone for surprise roos. The first pic and the last pic that show black chicks are the same bird. The first one shows the color I see irl the second looks much redder then it does irl. I have had my eye on that one as possible roo for quite sometime and a few others as well. I was guaranteed 3 females the rest were straight run so it wouldn’t surprise me at all to get another one or two in addition to the two I am already sure are boys. Until its more definitive Ill just keep on hoping that chick is BCM pullet lol :fl Thank you for warning though you cant count your chickens even after they are hatched!
I *think* that @RebeccaBoyd was referring to the one in the bottom pic that didn't post 'proper' in the thread...the one with a black and a light gold chick, The comb is, in addition to redder, also larger than the pullet in the first and the last 'proper' posted pic.
I don't know if that makes sense regarding posting...it only appears as a thumbnail image at way bottom of your post, not the larger image like the other pics.

@RebeccaBoyd , feel free to state that I misinterpreted your statement...but I was thinking the very same thing about the black & blonde 'pullets'...that the black is most likely NOT a pullet....

Going by the first picture you can breathe a bit more for the moment. Yes I see copper color in the hackles, but at almost 7 weeks old a pullet that is going to have a full copper Hackle marking will start to show color. Besides comb, watch it's back and wings. A pullet will not develop rich copper coloring anywhere on the back or wings. Your known boy will probably have those markings start to appear within a week.

Geez that Bernadette is determined. She pushed her way inbetween Diana and the wall tonight when Diana was practically glued to the wall. That earned her some pretty aggressive pecking from Diana (which is unusual), but she held firm.
Tonight she gets to sleep in the prime spot by the wall!

Daddy made special food for me, cos I'm his favowite.

Fine, I shared it with Tina. Sometimes she is nice to me.

But Poopy eventually came. She is not cool. This is not cool.

So I left cos I am the coolest kid in the hood.

Sounds like she is already on her way out of being broody, if she is coming out on her own- Dorothy did that a couple days then she was completely off the nest.

Could be that she is indeed coming out of her broodiness. These gals are going to drive us nuts - aren’t they ??🤨

Winter brings me no peace of mind. One of the cochins went broody for the first time somewhere around the last week of December to the first week of January. Any more I just look at the girls and tell them that "they hate me don't they".
I really thought Henny Penny had been cured as she hadn’t been broody since she hatched out her eggs a year ago!!!

Then last week she decided I wanna hatch more eggs - it’s getting cold so we must hatch more eggs!
