You know, it is perfectly okay to say 'This is personal and I don't wish to discuss it with you.' Or "Thank you for your thoughts/concerns, but this is a personal and private decision'. Or, for the real knotheads" It really is none of your business (why or what I am doing). And walk away. Given what Grandma has said about her brother and his child - I doubt that you can keep her quiet on this; honestly, I would say 'just don't tell her what is going on. Hospital stay - no divulging of reason, etc.' But, that horse has left the barn (and, unlike Russ, can't be easily put back in :lau ):hugs:hugs

I will be thinking of you when I get up in the morning. Do you think your mom could smuggle Branch in in a couple of days - she could say he is your emotional support animal. Obviously, not immediately, as with the drugs & pain...and recent incision and all. But, a few days post op???🤭🤫🤭

Or, maybe SHE would be willing to smuggle in 'the Devil's spawn'???;) 😆

I am hoping @RebeccaBoyd won’t need to be in hospital long enough to need a smuggled rooster. Hopefully she will be home and can recuperate at home on the sofa with him snuggling up.

Sydney, my fake BR, went broody before she was 1. And not since. 🤷‍♂️
Well, if you had to raise chicks by yourself - wouldn't once be enough for you? Even the two well behaved ones....she did lose one, too. I imagine that, though they know they have to take care of the remaining...I am also quite sure that they are aware of the loss. 😢 They can count, after all!

Sydney: (@ 6 mos.) ooo...I so want to be a mum!

Sydney: (@ 7+ months) How many times do I have to tell you to stay away from the blue stuff? (sniff, sniff: 'another one bits the dust. And another one's gone, and another one's gone. Another one bites the dust!😭)

Sydney: (@ 1.5 years): Phyllis - you are crazy, girl. Trust me, you DON'T want to do this!🤪 They drive you nuts, the losses tear your heart out...then someone takes them away after all your hard work of of raising and training them...one day 'poof' gone, just like that.

Don’t make fun of Twiggy! :(
I'm not, that is her mom's words for him. But, she is softening..even if she won't directly admit it. That's why I suggested him as a back-up. Mom doesn't like Branch, but his devil spawn, she is warming up to some!

Hmmm, this makes me think @RebeccaBoyd , your next offspring that is Branches needs to be 'Bud' ( you can call him Buddy, if 'Bud' will hurt his macho image!)

Speaking of macho images:

My brother decided to give me one of my Christmas presents early today. He figured I would freeze overnight in the hospital and miss my chickens. He knows me so well. What he does not know is my flock, he said here, this has your rooster on it. Um.....nope do not have polish, I have silkies with a crazy hair-do. He chuckled and said give it a matter of time and I would fix that situation. As for the sign, do I hang it on the coop or on my bedroom door.

Your brother is awesome and knows you well. He may not know the chickens as well, but:clap. He did well! As Branch (in particular) comes inside with you, on the door by the porch nest boxes is my vote. Save hanging it until you're home from surgery. It will give you something to ponder while you recover.

@RoyalChick I did a photo shoot just for you. Unfortunately, I didn't get to it until after dark, but...

My DC girl's 2 pullet chicks (the lone one who hatched 4 chicks):

Blackish girl ( she looks very much like her slightly older 'sister, the original 'blackish girl':

Black but with blond/gold feather shafts. Moderate beard & muffs. So, looks more like mom but has a bit of daddy's bears & muffs.

Her sister has more coloring from daddy, but clean 'face' like mom.. The lacing at her feather tips looks more black in the photos, but it is actually blue, and she has 'blue' (read, gray) undercarriage.

If you want a pair that are a bit younger than the originals.....

Or, the original Black & blackish...plus any of their full sister hatch mates (at POL now)..The 'black-ish' and one that is probably 1/2 ISA are roosting in the other coop:
(note, the original 9 hatched by broodies - one of their brothers is in the background in the first photo.

But, no pressure! ( 🤭 )
(Remember, 7 girls from the first hatch, 2 from the second. Any 2 or more from the first hatch can go, or both from the second hatch. I know they would have a wonderful home with you. IF you took from the first hatch, you could have eggs now...plus can still get baby chickies in the spring, too...🤷‍♀️ just sayin'.)
