In general, yes. They are more willing to let others scratch around while they watch. The cold slows them down. My Lilly had documented arthritis around 5 years old and was on meds for it. When it got cold and damp she slowed down.

She also hung out under cover more as she aged. I do think that could be linked to the increased prevalence of hawks but also I think to knowledge and the judgement that it wasn't worth the risk for that blade of grass.

Hattie is doing the same thing these days. She is 4 now. She is less likely to be out roaming and more likely to be hanging out in Hattie House or under the apple trees.

I agree, mine spend a lot more time just chilling under the roses than anything else. Rosie is at least 5 and the other two will be 5 in February!

Thank you for your replies on your older ladies. I'm relieved to know that a more quiet behaviour is normal as our hens age. Mine are only three, but I suppose high production breeds are old quicker. @fuentemoon the three of them look in good health and are so pretty on this picture!

I'm sorry to hear of those of you sick and / or in pain. I hope it will pass soon enough.

It's pouring rain here after all the snow we had three days ago. We try not to grumble because we need it ! The gutters were unfortunately still blocked by snow so my partner had to climb on the roof full of snow under the pouring rain to get them clear 🤦‍♀️.And the chickens are very unhappy right now.

Here are Merle and Gaston from yesterday and Chipie this morning. I just wish I could catch on photo how much water Gastounet spills around 😁.

Right now is 32 F. I'll take Pony's words and tell the chickens that summer is coming. Yuma, Arizona is literally 42 F right now and temperatures will rise up to 64 F and next week will be 70 F. Average temperatures for this week for them is 74.1. For PA... 42.2. :(Why can't I have this type of weather. I haven't had this kind of weather since September.
Wise River is one of 3 places in Montana that take turns swapping the trophy for coldest place in the state.

I hope this helps your own WARM temps make Arizona's seem SWELTERING.

Dear Aurora

I just finished your current commentary and was intrigued by your insightful suggestions.

As a up and coming leader in the Way of The Chicken I must say you suggestions surrounding insurrection are of interest to me.

You see I recently landed myself a Man Chicken who is at my beck and call, it has emboldened me so much that I was able to take down a Human, now granted this Human wasn’t expecting my attack; but it gave me the idea that making an unexpected attack is the way to gain status- as such o have started with the other of my kind (I am a Silkie), and managed to pretty much pummel the pretty little Curly Girlie whom the Human panders to.

I tried to take on Henny Penny but she’s a tough one- I continue to sneak attack her.

It is the Way Of The Chicken as you point out.

Again thank you oh majestic one and may all your attacks be bold and hearty.

Sincerely Wee Marty Pompei.

A little moan here...

My friend took me shopping too a place I love too go where there is spices galore and a lot of lovely yummiest. She is such a lovely person and has a full on busy life looking after her lovely children and running her little business which she has managed too keep going through the most difficult of times. Yet still she made time for this old lady :old I loathe to bother her but she insisted she wanted to treat me and help me too get what I needed...
Imagine her horror being sent a hundred pounds fine for parking her car near their door while we were shopping .

They must have a camera because they clocked her number plate so why hadn't they noticed we had entered they shopping area and spent good money there...
I'm hoping she will approach them because if they refuse to wave this robbery I intend too go to the papers and have already spoken too a reporter who is interested on the outcome of this imo is nothing less than an offence

Hmmmmm……

Red comb and wattles…✅
Squatting for several days…✅
Pelvic bones spread to “2 fingers” wide…✅
Investigating nest box, trying to sit on ceramic egg…✅

Could today be the day that Speedy, at 32 weeks old, finally lays her first egg??? Inquiring minds want to know.

Stay tuned for updates and details.

This also happens in Toronto at many places

She should be able to show them a shopping receipt and then she should be ok. Such a bad practice!

Personally I would never shop at a place like that and o would let everyone know.
