That is great about your back.Russ got his feet done Thursday. This afternoon Rosie hopped on him and rode him a bit. When she was finished I decided it was time to see if my back would handle me riding. I was on at a walk for maybe 10 minutes. I learned something. First I am out of shape and my legs were like Jell-O when I got off. Secondly, even with numb legs, my back was not hurting. It's official, Rosie is going to have to share her horse, I want on him for a bit every time she rides him.
I’m secretly starting an organization to save the fate of Twiggy. He deserves to stay home where he is.Things might settle down after spring. Maybe you could redirect him to a safer spot until the spring fever hormone issues calm down? Twig is so handsome, and he’s even gotten his own little band of ladies that follow him.
They do both have green legs, which is something I didn’t even really knew was possible until recently, and which I love, but it is possible that Babs’ are more green.Maybe it’s the lighting - when the sun reflects off them - the green in Bab’s legs is just gorgeous!Eli’s are probably as stunning, but in the shade it’s harder to see.

Eli save some of the green for her feathers.
This is the kind of photo you get when you are trying to look for poop and feed treats at the same time. But at least I captured some of her beautiful feathers!

I do not want to have to sell him, it is killing me considering it. What Twig really needs to do is man up and stand his ground against Bubba. He also needs to stop taking his girls down to the barn, the chicken killing dog lives down there. I think if Twig for once would fight Bubba instead of running just one time the boys might come to a understanding.I’m secretly starting an organization to save the fate of Twiggy. I will be asking my church friends to sign a petition.I’m secretly starting an organization to save the fate of Twiggy. He deserves to stay home where he is.![]()
I do think that you should wait as long as you can. The hormone changes might change the dynamics of the whole tribe.I do not want to have to sell him, it is killing me considering it. I have to agree that 2.5-3’ is more than adequate, and safe, as long as there aren’t any rafter alternatives available they will all adjust and eventually be content with this height. My Chicken Trailer roosts are about this height, although I run deep bedding in the winter and they get “lower” as the floor raises up, I’ve yet to have an injury from falling/flying/jumping… even with the Meat Hybrids, and you don’t get a less athletic chicken build than that (Trouble and Zip Tie are going on 2 or 3 now!)That is still a good amount of hens to keep - and plenty of eggs!
I am getting a consensus of roost height of around 2.5 to 3' - which is what I was thinking of doing last year.
I could even do the nest boxes as steps - make the bottom ones around 2' deep and the top ones around 14" deep and about 1.5' off the ground - that would still be an easy hop/flap for the silkies. OR along the short wall at the door put in a couple bottom nest boxes with the top at around 1.5', then a few second story boxes run them along the long wall with the tops around 2.5' ('L' shape to the nest boxes) - and then run roosts at 2.5' along the long wall and far short wall.
Maybe it is her secret language.Feather pattern, looks like an Egyptian hieroglyph Stella!
