Snowy day here, the chickens were hiding/ scratching around in their coop when i checked on them. I am waiting a bit to head to work, supposed to start warming up around 10am. Currently at 33° perfect nasty slidey slush temp.

I was so excited to meet new horses that I got no pictures once I read the rest of what I have missed though, I have a funny story about what happened when I was there!

I don’t believe there is any Wyandotte in mine. I am not good on breeds even with my book but in this case @bgmathteach knows the answer.

I need to have my mother send me pictures of her, because my camera is broken... I need a new phone!!

As soon as I sit down she jumps onto my arm and burrows into my jacket because she believes I have sunflower seeds in my shirt pocket.

Here is Truly who is a grey you you can see that she is all white now that she is older (greys get whiter as they get older). Truly was born chestnut in colour and started going grey as a yearling. Also Truly has black skin rather than pink or mottled skin (I love a nice dappled grey!).

Greys also don't have those varnish markings.

But you will see that Truly has small chestnut flecks on her body - those are called flea-bits - she is a Flea-bitten Grey. Those differ from a Leopard Appaloosa which have large round spots all over their body.

I had a leopard appy but I don't have any photos here on site (but I am sure you can google leopard appaloosa).

Trust me, I know my horses! Lenny is a sweet flea-bitten grey. He has nice, somewhat larger ones around his eyes, as you can see in this picture. Truly looks so sweet! I love dappled greys! Don't (Spelling check on both of these) Lusitano's or/and Lippizaner's start off bay or chestnut, and then turn grey? Most of the horses at my barn who have snips or blazes down their nose have pink noses! So cute! Can't greys be rabicano?

If she will let you, as soon as she hops up and burrows in, gently rub her at the base of her neck. Rub down to where her wings start. If she is anything like Branch in about a minute she will melt and pass out. There is nothing wrong with having at least 1 lap chicken in your flock.

I will give it a go. I have managed to rub her a little and she appears to tolerate it as long as she is searching for sunflower seeds. If she concludes there aren't any then she doesn't have patience for me any longer. But we have come a long, long way so I will see how far I can get with her.

Any colour can become grey. Greying just means that the colour will go from dark to white. The Grey gene (genetic trait) is a dominant gene. So one of the parents will always be grey. You will not get a grey from two horses that are not grey.

I have had paints and appaloosas that went grey, it is frowned upon to breed grey parents to Appaloosa and Paint horses because if they get that dominant grey gene they will turn white and you won't see the dark and white colour both breeds are famous for.

Yes Lusitano and Lippizaner are typically grey, but from time to time a bay/black or chestnut will crop up in a foal. Those colours are recessive - so if a parent is carrying that recessive gene and they are bred to another parent with that recessive gene there is a 25% chance of getting a horse that doesn't turn grey

I love when a bay horse goes grey, they usually keep the black mane and tail and black legs - they look really sharp

Rabicano is actually not a grey - it is a 'sort of' roan type colour. BUT it isn't roan, the rabicano colour runs up from the belly onto the sides of the horse. This a HUGELY popular colour with the Arabian horses in the middle east. They can actually look like a brindle dog with the colour - it's amazing when you see one.

BUT if that Rabicano horse was bred to a grey and the resulting foal gets the grey gene - that foal will go grey - boohoo!
