I don’t honestly know. She shifts them and of course all the eggs are pretty much identical since they are all Orpingtons. I just lifted her up a bit and peeked in. I couldn’t see all the eggs just a few.

I have heard of people candling and such at this point but idk how they go about doing so without harm. Now, if she had gotten off them today when I was out there I entirely would have been been more inclined to inspect each of them but nope so far as I can tell she hasn’t budged today at all.
She is doing it all properly ❤️

I should have suggested marking that egg and circling the area. Well nothing to do for it now except wait and see anyways. Actually I am Quite eggcited!

Yes but you have to watch out when you open it up, the gang here wanted to jump out and either land on me, or try for the counter top behind me (and miss until they got better at it). I ended up setting up a little “trapeze net” - a screen for a window- just below the opening as a safety net!
Hmmm yes I know what you mean! Once they taste freedom it’s a game changer for them! I even noticed that with the babies and mama today - that one grey I am interested in was zooming around and around the two mamas hahaha it was like watching a grey cotton ball running!

Oh my gosh you are going to have such a laugh when you get them out in a large area!!! Zipping around and flying!

That is a great description! I have been thinking of it as some sort of trance like state. When I bring food out for her, a watery mash, I have to stick it under her beak till she come back to herself, so to speak, then she will eat a bit and look at me like ohh its you bothering me AGAIN, but at least you brought snacks.
When our chooks are laying eggs, if you put food under their beaks, they will look down, eat it, and look back up.

I agree on more silkies but I cannot have another roo. If I kept another boy I would have to place one of the current 3. I had enough trouble getting Branch and Bubba to accept Twig. After over 2 months of trying to kill him they are finally co-existing again. Tomorrow I am probably going to have to do something I hate and put down Madea. I have not been able to rehome him and the 3 boys have turned on him. 2 days ago he somehow managed to hurt his leg. I do not know if he got it hung, or if one of the boys really did a number on him but after tonight's inspection I believe it is broken around the joint area. Cage rest might help for a few weeks, but even if he was a pullet cage, rest is not a option right now with 4 broody girls all my isolation spots are taken throughout the day. I have a suspicion one of the boys hurt him. He was starting to go after the girls and was stupid about it causing the hens to call for the boys for backup. I watched him throughout the day today and while he can get around he has to take frequent rest periods. He is a sitting duck for a predator. I made sure he went to bed with a full crop tonight, and will make sure he has a good breakfast in the morning before the deed is done.
I am sorry to hear this, but better not to let him suffer. Silly little man 😢 but you’re right can’t keep them all.

This part of Fluffy Butt Acres seems to have some decent stuff about broodies, specifically the @Shadrach posts.
