Thank you. Both your and @RebeccaBoyd's video have the same tut-tut-tut sound and Eli is definitely making that noise. She also flared up when I took Babs' egg from under her.
Not a good picture because it is almost dark - but she has now moved into the middle bay, effectively blocking access to the boxes on either side and she seems to be quite fluffed up.
I am not sure exactly what to do - because of her weird illness I am worried about nutrition. Vet said to keep supportive care with food and vitamins in case any kind of deficiency was making her worse.
My plan at the moment is to make her get up and eat a couple of times a day and to keep that little pot of chick starter food right by her. I notice she will eat ravenously from that but only if I come and touch her and stroke her. She doesn't seem to like me doing that but it stirs her up and she eats.
Does anyone else have any suggestions on how to handle it? I mean I could direct dose her with Nutridrench each day but it feels like it would be better if she ate of her own accord even if I need to pull her out of the box to make her do so.
What do you all think?

I have been feeding Brownie ever since I gave her real eggs. Twice a day I go in, throw a blanket down and sit with her. I have been giving her warm water with a bit of nutridrench in it mixed with chick feed. Its rather on the watery side as I feel like hydration is the most critical thing in her case. My presence and food shoved under her beak seems to make her wake up enough to eat. She seems grateful for the easily digestible snack and the water. Until hatch day I made sure she got up at least once every other day. Surprisingly a dust bath was her highest priority as soon as she shook off the “trance state” then food then water.

The need to poop seems to motivate her to get up every other day.

I hope sharing my experience helps some. I haven’t a clue if any of what I am doing is right or necessary lol but it seems to be causing no harm.

:lau I'm sorry I could not help it. Welcome to my world with Momma Hen. You have now been initiated into the world of having a bat crap crazy momma. Enjoy every minute of it, those momma's try your patience every day but really do make the best mothers. No one, and I mean no one is going to mess with her chicks.
In retrospect it was hilarious! I wouldn’t trade it for anything :) seeing those babies look lovingly up their mama makes it all worth it.

I am going to move out that bowl she is in so the chicks can move around to get to the water and feed more easily, when Brownie will let them that is 😂 I fear one will take a leap and not be able to get back to mama if I dont. Wish me luck, I am more then a little apprehensive, I am 100% positive she is gonna hate this and let me know she hates this. I will wear glasses and long sleeves just in case she decides to trounce me for it. I also need to see if any eggs didn’t make it and remove them. Send thoughts and prayers!!

I must resist calling her Pooh even if she is best friends with Piglet. So undignified. And yet somehow ……
Instead of Pooh, there is Tigger, Kanga or Roo.
I also was going to mention Roo, he and Piglet were good friends.

I don’t get this temperature thing at all. My little ones are 18 days old. So just a few days short of three weeks.
According to everything people post they are supposed to be at 84 degrees (F).
The temperature in the Chicken Palace right now is 58F.
How come they aren’t cold. I don’t think they would be so energetic if they were suffering so I am not too worried.
But I am a bit worried!
I have read a lot of posts in the section in raising chicks that say the “traditional wisdom” about proper temps for young chicks are a bunch of malarkey. It’s not like broody mamas lower their temperature by 5 degrees per week. And a lot of people also say that temps too warm seem to cause more pasty butt. As long as they know where it is, and can easily get to it any time they feel cold, they should be fine. And mine would occasionally hang out on top of my MHP even once they no longer went under it.

California gets shakes twice a year maybe. Sometimes none at all!
Both of you require to pay taxes for being off topic!

Midnight snack time.

I remember there was one earthquake where we had just gotten back from a certain defunct toy store. I was 7, maybe 8 at the time. Anyways, my Dad was opening one of the toys. The night before there was a big earthquake. It broke lots of our statues, knocked down some books and other things off of shelves, and spilled a bottle of windex on the floor. I remember the lights going out while I was reading in bed, then hearing my Mom in the garage doing something, and I had thought the water heater exploded until the ground was shaking. I think I had read all the labels on the water heater too many times. After lots of cleanup, we went to bed. Now, back to the opening of the toy. As the toy was being opened, the ground started shaking. I was terrified. My Mom was loading the car up to go to the grocery store a few streets over. I ran over and asked her if I could go with her. I believed that I could get away from the earthquake. She told me otherwise. It was then that I learned that earthquakes don't just hit one house. They hit many.
Tax tax tax SVP 💕 thank you

Why don’t you get a cardboard box bigger than the tub she is in cut it down to the height of the tub, put the tub in there, and fill around it wilth Shavings, pack them down and there you have a level ground for the chicks - once they are a week old you can remove the tub and
Momma can just nest in the box which you can keep cutting down so the chicks can easily access the rest of the tent.

Maybe @MaryJanet should consider giving it to her girls. Especially the hen who has real issues with fatty liver disease!

MJ: excerpt from the study:

11.3. Hepatoprotective Effect

In 2005, two teams from Pakistani universities in Karachi investigated the hepatoprotective properties of A. vulgaris herb extracts in in vivo studies on mice. They divided the test rodents into five groups and conducted an experiment. The first and second groups were administered with a saline solution; two hours later, the second group received an additional 700 mg/kg d-galactosamine and 1 μg/kg lipopolysaccharide, which caused liver inflammation as confirmed by elevated levels of hepatic function indicators—alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) and aspartate aminotransferase (ASPAT). The third, fourth, and fifth groups were given different, prophylactic, doses (from 150 to 600 mg/kg BW) of a crude hydromethanolic extract prepared from the aerial parts of A. vulgaris, and an hour later, received d-galactosamine and lipopolysaccharide. A significant reduction was noted in ASPAT and ALAT activities in plasma in all the three groups. The results observed in these groups were confirmed by a histopathological examination of the liver, which showed a decrease in cellular edema and apoptotic cell count, and no hyperemia of the hepatic parenchyma, relative to the second group [105].
Interesting! I'll keep it bookmarked in case her condition ever worsens.

Oh that is very helpful. It sounds exactly like Eli. Of course Eli doesn’t have real eggs under her. I will continue with that approach.

The Tweens

Well @RoyalChick I forgot to plug the brooder plate in last night when I put the tweens to bed. The office/feed room is set around 17C, not by any means hot, warm at best.

I checked them last night around 1 am and they were I snacking - not sure if being a bit chilly contributed to the midnight snack.

This morning they were eager to get out so I let them out to run around - just checked the camera and they are roosting on the steps I use for the gang to get up on the ledge in the hen house.

They seem to have been almost fully integrated into the main group. Just wish Henny Penny would have taken an interest in them.
