I suspected as much which is why I was puzzled at the suggestion I invite you to a 'bad shot' quail hunt!
Of course you would be very welcome, but I might deploy you to shoo the quail into the brush so they don't get shot.
In the cold light of day I am thinking a bird that requires a license and for me to stipulate that I won't do the very thing I want to do (liberate them) may not be such a good idea.
I will talk to the reintroduction people - but looking at what they post they are looking for people with thousands of acres.
I might still consider the 'ooops' they got away from the guy's neighbor but I will also explore Guineas (it confuses me that I can release a non-native, possibly invasive bird into the wild and not a native nearly extent one - but I am sure there is a reason!).
The best tick-eaters apparently are opossums. I have some of them around but I could encourage more by building them some nest boxes. I know they can kill chickens - but that is mainly chicks and at night when mine are safely locked up - so I think I am OK having more opossums.

Love that mohawk!

Just realized I don’t think I ever posted that his surgery went well. But it was a pretty major repair, and he is very uncomfortable. I have a feeling it will be several weeks before he isn’t in almost constant pain, even with medication and icing it.

Glad to hear the surgery was a success!

I 100% empathize, orthopedic surgery is in a league of its own. The only thing that got me through is the knowledge that without surgery it would only ever get worse but with surgery it will be painful but it is temporary then it gets better and better. I had to remind myself of this manyyyyy times throughout recovery.

Be kind to yourself as you continue to heal and take breaks when you can as you care for husband through his recovery. ❤️‍🩹

Oh I love magpies we have in Alberta and people out there don’t like them but I think they are wonderful! Cheeky little sh!ya that get into everything! Steal the guys lunches on the pipeline while working.

(RM how did you rename the URL?)
Oh how that video brings back memories.

Babs is always ready to oblige with a fluffy butt to wish you all a happy Friday.
Others, not so easy!

The picture of Eli was the best shot I could get of her perching on my hand while I carry her away from her nest and get some food into her.

I won again today with Rice Krispies and cat food. But she only stayed out ten minutes before rushing back to the nest. I thought of closing the door so she couldn’t get back in to the hen house but Bernie needed to lay an egg and I feel life is stressful enough for Bernie without me adding that problem.

This young lady was willing to oblige with a fluffy butt photo shoot.
She will be a silver version of Bernadette and like Bernie she has very long legs and big feet.
We are just past the age when Bernie lost the use of her legs so I am going to give a bit of Vitamin B supplement just in case.
I need her to tell me her name. Isn’t she pretty?!
Note Piglet forcing her way in to the photo shoot as usual!

Hello everyone. I took a day break as it was Rosie's birthday yesterday and wow am I behind. I did see where @Ponypoor is worried about Martina being a boy because of sparring. Looking at current pictures and video's I am sorry I do not see a boy. That soft gold color on her to me screams pullet. I feel if it was a young cockerel they would be more of a brighter orange or red. Pullets can fight with the best of them. The Marshmallows have frequent sparring matches to this day trying to assert dominance. Remember when Corona was a chick? She was the only pullet in her hatch and had 7 brothers. If you had went by behavior you would have swore she was a young cockerel. She was the dominate chick and whipped every single one of her brothers daily. She is still fairly high up on the pecking order. If someone challenges Butter occasionally, it is Corona. She also stands up and starts fights with Momma Hen the crazy girl. By the pictures you posted of the teens yesterday I say you have 2 pullets and a cockerel. Now, If i am wrong, I will admit it later....when one crows.

How about Platinum, and Plati (or Platty) for short?

You could also call her Silver Queen, and Silvi for short?

I need to discuss it with her. For some reason Calypso came to my mind.

The clean-legged black one also hasn't shared her name. I was thinking maybe Pippa (short for Zipporah), or Laila/Layla which means night, but she and I have not talked about this at all yet!

Yes I figure that if the one crows then any other cockerels soon start up also.

I think that with the wee ones, the Penelope chick is a roo, this morning when I was herding them out with my guide sticks it jumped on as if to attack the stick then pecked at it as I was trying to get them all to go out.

Also it is 2 weeks old and still no tail feathers - generally Pullets will grow their tail feathers faster than Roos.

At any rate they are not causing any trouble (yet) - though they did run out the back door of the barn UNDER Reenies hooves a while back and gave me a conniption fit! And then I tried to get them back inside but they ran around the barn, so I figured ok let go in the front door. So I guided them around the barn through the mesh fence, where the mamas were waiting - and proceeded to bet the crap out of them.

I managed to grab Martina and marched her into the barn, then went back for the other 2 who were all screaming bloody murder!

Right now they are snoozing at my feet here in the Office - need to watch I don't roll my chair over them !!!

Oh and Marty had a huge brawl with Fluffy and Curly - Mr P ran over and I thought he would break it up but he didn't. I ended up just letting it come to its own conclusion as the chicks were out of the way. Marty won, and Fluffy went off with her chicks and Curly.

I just need to have those two mamas and their chicks fully integrated back into the flock with out my having to watch them like a hawk and lock them away when I go somewhere. Soon I think that will happen, the chicks are getting more savvy about getting out of trouble, but they are still a bit on the slow side.
