I made the mistake of planting cactus in the garden.

Insert swear words here….

I look at that garden each morning and tell myself I have to weed in there - it’s now a jungle of cactus and foot high grass, I think I will just dig it all up and burn it.

I swear those cacti can throw needles at me when I weed!

I would send you Rosie to weed it for you. I know her though, she would find a way to weasel a plant or two from you to bring home. My fill dirt of a yard is useless for a flower garden. Leave it to that child to plant a cactus and have them flourish. Before you ask, no I have never once let her get that idea in her head. She would have one planted before the week was out.

The cactus I have in my garden survive -30C winters, they would flourish no problem were you are! They are native to Ontario, and have lovely yellow flowers.

Granted they are threatened here as people dig it up and burn it off, and plow fields which destroy it.

But it spreads like crazy and grows really well.

Rosie has a thing for cactus plants. I despise them with a passion. Fell on one when I was about 4 at my grandmothers and have hated them ever since. 2 years ago she was nagging for one for her birthday. I relented finally and struck a deal with her. I would get her 1....just 1 and if she kept it alive for a year I would get her another for her birthday. As long as she kept them alive herself every year she could have another birthday cactus. I really thought she would kill it, I prayed she would kill it. Today I paid up 2 days late with her 3rd birthday cactus. I still hate them. I can clean around them and not even touch them and still get thorns in my hand.

Cactus 1, why didn't you die? You were never supposed to last.

That made me laugh out loud.
The only cactus I like is Christmas cactus which I think is not a real cactus but a succulent and has no thorns.

Wouldn't that be something. Hey Alex, have you got close enough to see if ANY have feathered feet? If they are his there is a 50/50 shot of feathered feet.

So here is a thought. How good of a relationship do you have with your neighbor? Maybe a deal could be struck since your hens are neglecting their duties to the "way of the chicken" and not going broody. You could ask next time they have a broody hen to let her set on some of your eggs to hatch out and raise for you.

Maybe a deal could be struck since your hens are neglecting their duties to the "way of the chicken" and not going broody. You could ask next time they have a broody hen to let her set on some of your eggs to hatch out and raise for you.

The idea is sweet. But that guy is the irresponsible one, who spreads rat poison around his house. I really don’t trust him that much.
