Mazzie is adorable, and I think you have a winner, but some of mine are going to give it a go anyway.

First up is Sylvie. That is now her name with due respect Bob's lovely baby Sylvie that lived for too short a time at FBA.

Sylvie is my front runner in this competition. Her main attributes are that she has some places with beautiful, perfect little feathers. And some baby fluff. And some completely bald patches. It is her neck that lets her down.

I present you Miss Sylvie’s bad hair day.

Next up is Piglet who is in better shape than Sylvie but whose feathers seem to go in random directions, and as a chick who enjoys flying she is often exposing her completely naked pits!

Tassels is not really a contender but does generally prefer the rumpled look.

Calypso refused to participate and is looking rather splendid with a complete tail in place.

And finally, Winnie doesn’t understand all the fuss. She is almost completely feathered and even has the rose tinted chest she will have as an adult. She wanted everyone to understand that in this photo she had not yet had her bath and put everything in place. She likes to look ‘just so’.

Oh I almost forgot a quick broody Eli update - she moved back up to the upper level (which is now empty because I took the golf ball and ceramic egg out last night). So she is sitting on nothing.
Babs has moved in to the lower one. I think she is just laying her own daily egg, but she has been in there for a while.
I cannot cope with two of them. Poor Bernie is all on her own with the babies.

Mazzie has bald patches under her wings as well. Right now she is just comical. She still has baby fuzz, silkie fuzz and then the typical few hard wing feathers like Branch and Chiquita. She is sporting the "Cactus" look at the moment. That or she stuck a toenail in a light socket.

That is hot for them. Chickens are really not built for the heat, they actually do much better in cold weather. I see this more often with my boys. The hens are smart, during the heat of the day you will find them relaxing in shade. The boys, well, they are doing what boys do and more active. If the hen is busy running around trying to escape the boy's attention during the hottest parts then I will see their combs affected. All you can do is provide shade and plenty of water. If they are confined to a coop make sure it is well ventilated for optimum air circulation. I have not hit 90s yet. It has been in the high 70s to low 80s and already a few days of humid weather. 75+, especially if humidity is involved, watch for signs of heat stress.

Ok. They have plenty of shade, including the Tree of Peace. We live in a dry, dry, desert. Therefore, almost no humidity.

Ok. They have plenty of shade, including the Tree of Peace. We live in a dry, dry, desert. Therefore, almost no humidity.

If it is dry you can use a misting system to give them some cool.
You can spend money and buy a misting system that would run off a garden hose and faucet - they are often sold for people together with patio umbrellas.
Or you can go simple and cheap and just hang wet towels around the place. As they dry they cool the air.
Those methods work less well when it is humid but even in my humidity I had some luck cooling the Chicken Palace by hanging a wet sheet with a fan placed outside the Palace blowing towards the sheet.
It is a nice practical application of science and it is cool (pun intended) when you see it work for real.

Have you watched or read The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien?
They're really good, and they feature some kind of little person called a hobbit. Hobbits have huge hairy feet and they don't wear shoes. Just like you!

I don't really watch movies.
I am not little. I am quite big. And my feet are not hairy.
I don't like wearing shoes at all though. You got that part right.

Let me guess, your chickens walked towards the hottest part of the palace after you set that up?
