6 feet or 6 inches?

Just clarifying, both will kill ya! But one will likely flatten ya!
6 feet - it is definitely a 'flatten you' kind of branch and it is resting on some other also big branches that have been weighed down and are at risk of snapping.
It is a massive tree - I would say 100' or maybe more - I will ask the tree guys tomorrow - and this is one of the big main branches maybe 40' up.
It is scary.
Last fall it shed a branch that was more like 8" in diameter that missed the roof of the Chicken Palace by inches - and that made a huge thud when it hit the ground.

Maybe you should get them to trim any other branches that could present a threat while they are up there.
And ask about the health of the tree itself. It's not a good sign that it's main branch is falling.

Chicken Palace drama
There is a massive - think maybe 6’ circumference - branch about to come down from the big tree that shades the Chicken Palace.
It is resting on some lower branches which are bent to breaking point.
If it comes down it will likely do a lot of damage.
I called the local tree guy and he will come first thing in the morning with someone who can climb up and deal with it. I can’t even imagine how!
I just have to hope that there are no strong winds between now and the morning when they get here.
Of course while I was out showing the tree guy the issue the skies opened so I am completely drenched.
Need to go in and dry off and then go back out to give the Princesses fresh water.

Dangerous trees tax: Piglet!
OMG/wholly guacamole! a 6 foot diameter branch??? How stinking big is the tree itself?? 🌳

the ❤️ response was for the ever darling Piglet. The above is for the tree/branch!

Good thinking and yes, they will do that. I wouldn't say this is its main branch it is one of many huge branches. I will try to get a picture if I can do so without being underneath it.
I am fortunate enough to live with many huge mature trees (though fewer than before Hurricane Sandy) and so I have the tree service inspect regularly. This guy pops by and looks around every few months and he also brings free woodchips. So I am as confident as I can be that the tree is healthy - the truth is that trees do sometimes shed big branches. Sometimes I hear them fall in the woods which is a very primeval sort of sound. There is always a short silence immediately after and then the birds start up again.

This a repost, but I thought it would make a nice twofer for @BY Bob.

And a few more photos of these freedom loving ladies..the trust building phase is taking time ! Alba's comb flops to the left and Nieva to the right.
They are still laying 5 to 6 times a week, but no more double yolk or soft shell. I think they are getting better health wise, they used to have very pale yolks compared to all my other hens, and now they have turned much more orange like the other layers.

I think the first and the last post would be great calendar photo submissions, ❤️❤️❤️if you can make the work with the guidelines.!

Well maybe I am not good at estimating circumference from that distance. I will have the facts tomorrow when the tree guy comes.
The fact is, even if I am 100% wrong and it is only 3' in circumference it is still a big dangerous branch.
I won't go check now for obvious safety reasons but from memory the trunk at about 5' up (so past the point it splays out for the roots) is about 12' in circumference. But maybe I am exaggerating everything in my mind because it is scary.
More facts tomorrow!

I haven't been on this thread for a while but I would like to tell you I am off to the Outer Banks. I'm in Virginia right now and we passed a few interesting artifacts.

Grandma looks like a boat. Too bad. She's missing out on all the fun.

We go to the outer banks every fall. Have a great time. Be sure to swing by Bob's Grill.
