Popcorn & Butters vet home visit

The vet noted how prominent her keel bone is. Butters has some appetite, though not great. She is insane for walnuts and readily eats them so I'm giving her two or so each day. Her weight was holding at 3lbs 5oz.

Popcorn got a look over too, I wanted a second opinion on her abdomen. She has gained weight, another 4-6oz or so, and she's now 4.5 condition score (different vet making the call), during this time of trying to entice Butters to eat. So now I must try to limit her gaining any further. I worried this might be a consequence.

Her presence has helped Butters want to eat, but Popcorn is so fast at nabbing from me, stealing from others, and just plain fast sewing-machine eating that she got the lion's share of anything offered to them. Butters being slow to come around to feeling like eating when faced with goodies, and her habit of putting whatever it is on the ground first contributed too.

Who are you calling fat?

So yesterday I got Butters an extra walnut in secret. But this morning Popcorn would first check what I was doing with Butters hanging near me, then wander off - but not far -and zip back when she (rightly) suspected she heard a walnut being broken into pieces. At least now Butters is eating at least a little without much encouragement.

The vet recommended watching Butters' weight, no tube feeding for now unless she starts to lose weight, and boosting her B vitamins to increase her appetite. I've ordered rooster booster cell liquid, which includes other vitamins too, but it hasn't come yet.

She just got into the chicks' medicated feed with gusto. Bad for keeping her B vitamins levels up, but good for calories

The vet also said to watch for mites, there was a fair amount of either dustbathing dirt (what I suspect) and/or mites poop near her vent, but we could not find any live mites on anybody. The vet wondered if Butters just has not been cleaning herself up as well as the others. I'll keep checking.

She did look at her squinty left eye, how it's also a bit sunken, and saw nothing, and had no thought on it except that fat loss could occur there too which makes our eyes look more sunken as we age. But one eye? She had no idea really.

Butters has been pushing new feathers in and the vet confirmed, we saw all kinds of new pins. This is good, meaning her nutrition is enough to enable her to molt. See her in the back, with a feather just lying out on her back? That's Hazel to the left, starting a dustbath, Popcorn resting to the right about to start too, and Butters sunbathing. Butters soon moved right next to Popcorn for dustbathing too. Popcorn is going into molt, fluff feathers are just popping off her.

Prayers needed everyone please.

Grandma insisted she wanted to sit out on the porch. I get her outside and before I could get the chair under her to sit down she purposefully fell. I managed to catch her to break her fall but we could not get her back up and she refused to help try. Ambulance is here and she is going to the hospital for x-rays. I will update everyone this evening when I know more.

Prayers for nothing broken 🙏

I love that!
I want to live somewhere that has winter so badly!
Heh heh.
Heh heh heh.
Until you HAVE a winter. Then you might think differently.
Uh huh. Walking through snow that's over your boots. Slipping and falling on your butt. Not being able to go anywhere, because the roads aren't plowed. Oh, plowing? That's what the county has to do to get the 2' of snow off the road. They haven't gotten to us yet.
