I will try that with Tassels. I am a bit afraid of Bernie. She is so tall!
Having met her, I would also be afraid of Bernie. I would not try hugging her. If successful, she would never forget it or forgive the indignity.

You weren’t kidding; that is a tall chicken!
That is Tassels not Bernie. Tassels is still young (not yet laying) and is growing up to be a big chicken.
Bernie however is much taller. She has very long legs and stands upright like a rooster. She is quite intimidating!

Are these Bielefelders? What a pile of sweeties
Yup, those are my Bielefelder girls. Robin, on the arm of the chair, used to be much more standoffish. I think the "I'm getting close to laying, so I'll be more friendly" is holding true with her. I can pet her -- a little bit! -- before she will hop down. Yesterday, they were all dozing off and then preening. I stroked her more than usual while she was preening, figuring that she was "busy" and might not notice the sensation as much. It worked! :)

What breeds? I’ve heard it can take up to six months for some of the heritage. You must be super close!
They are all mutts 😊 I have a thing for ‘mixed bag’ chickens - anything goes here.

I do have 4 silkies and my Roo is a Polish; he is the Dada of those pullets so maybe Polish are slow layers.
