Having met her, I would also be afraid of Bernie. I would not try hugging her. If successful, she would never forget it or forgive the indignity.I will try that with Tassels. I am a bit afraid of Bernie. She is so tall!
That is Tassels not Bernie. Tassels is still young (not yet laying) and is growing up to be a big chicken. You weren’t kidding; that is a tall chicken!
Yup, those are my Bielefelder girls. Robin, on the arm of the chair, used to be much more standoffish. I think the "I'm getting close to laying, so I'll be more friendly" is holding true with her. I can pet her -- a little bit! -- before she will hop down. Yesterday, they were all dozing off and then preening. I stroked her more than usual while she was preening, figuring that she was "busy" and might not notice the sensation as much. It worked! Are these Bielefelders? What a pile of sweeties
They are all muttsWhat breeds? I’ve heard it can take up to six months for some of the heritage. You must be super close!
And a beautiful egg it wasTry telling that to Bernie - she took 11 months before laying her first egg.

I deploy this strategy with Piglet. With her it is food rather than preening that keeps her busy!stroked her more than usual while she was preening, figuring that she was "busy" and might not notice the sensation as much. It worked!![]()
