Marty and Bernie would be a scary team! Can you imagine the two of them while trying to check on chicks or Mr P ? I would have to count my fingers after!
I see your Marty and Bernie combo and raise you all 1 bat crap crazy Momma Hen protecting newly hatched chicks any day of the week.

Did you check her neck? Hawks try for 1 of 2 things: Grab the back to carry it (prey) off, or go for the neck. Smaller hawks nearly always try to get the neck - they repeatedly squeeze, trying to pierce and suffocate or exanguinate their prey
I think so but maybe not as thoroughly as I should. I did not know that about hawks, and having seen the battle it was more of a full body to body contact - they were like wrestlers rolling around in the dirt.
That said, I feel pretty confident that she doesn't have a deep penetrating wound of the neck affecting major structures: arteries (no blood); trachea (no issues with breathing and indeed yelling); esophagus (no issue with eating things of different consistency, or drinking); spinal cord (full range of movement of her head and no sign of paralysis).
I will make a game day decision tomorrow whether to go back over Pooh or do a first exam of Bernie..

I think netting is a fantastic idea, but for proper peace of mind I would have the barrier extend all the way to the ground (such as netting + fencing).

A hawk flying through a tiny hole:

The netting I got my girls for their run extension. It has saved them at least a dozen times from air assaults that I have personally witnessed:

I have an idea about hoisting a netting canopy on ropes from the eaves - a bit like a sail - over their favorite hangout.
Just for the winter. When the leaves are out it is pretty dense vegetation cover which is why they like it.

WOW JUST WOW!!!

What an amazing creature - what a terrifying creature!

A couple times here, when we used to feed the birds, they have taken Mourning Doves, but I have never seen them take a Jay or crow.

Ok my kiddos are never going to go outside again! That was just scary.
