You need to hear Rebecca’s story about her Momma Hen the Old Bat. She sat on AND hatched out chicks last winter on the side of a basically a cliff near her house - she could see her but couldn’t reach her.

This is on Kentucky were they get winter! We all basically love Momma Hen - she’s can be vicious with her eggs and chicks apparently But she’s the best mama hen ever! The things that hen has survived…. Well she’s amazing for a chicken. If I get a chance one day I’ll find her beginning story and post the link here.

That is most clearly too large to be a mere raccoon… larger looking even than a bobcat. Must be either a cougar or a more likely a wolverine, as it looks far too shaggy for a feline

I just refined my search. There are several posts on January 7-8 that tell most of the saga.
It was a big drama that is for sure!

Let me stand corrected. Momma Hen is not just laying eggs in her little cave, the devil is full on broody and setting. I saw she came off for about a hour then went back. I waited until after dark and got out my good flashlight and went to see. She is on her nest. I can cry right now. I cannot get to her to remove the eggs. I do not know how long she has been laying nor how many she is setting on. I also do not know if today is even day 1. I feel this is karma biting me in the butt for teasing @Ponypoor . Lesson learned folks. Do not laugh at someone and say they are going to wide up with a sneaky broody hen when they do not want chicks. YOU will be the one with the sneaky broody hen.
