HAPPY 4TH???? And the illegal rockets red glare!!! It looks and sounds like a war zone on our street! This is what Israeli's must go thru every day of their lives (I'm watching a war update on the internet).

Our little chicker-doodles were running around bumping into each other when each illegal thunder works went off today but it's unbelievable what evening stadium fireworks are like!!

DH put the little guys away in the coop early. Once they are in torpor and snuggle together they calm down. But the skies are so filled with smelly sulphur clouds that the street lights are a fuzzy faint glow.

Tomorrow morning there'll be a lot of firework debris and bottle rocket sticks to sweep up before letting the hens out of the pen!

@RebeccaBoyd we got her off the nest, she had herself cleaned up pretty well but we wiped some areas that looked they might be sticky.

That was one mad hen. We put her down and went to work on the nest. I took all the eggs out, restrawed the nest, and went to work on the eggs. Aurora, Hattie, Lady Featherington, and Sydney were all yelling at me as I did this.

I had 4 of them as clean as I felt safe doing when Lady Featherington decided to get back on the nest. Except she decided that she would just take Glynda's nest. A fight broke out. Glynda was not having it and got Lady Featherington by the comb. There was a struggle and I became seriously frightened that more eggs would be broken.

I reached in and Gynda let go to attack me. Lady Featherington got away and I closed the nest box lid. I finished cleaning the egg as best I could and when I opened the box to replace the final egg Lady Featherington was back on her nest. I tucked the egg under her and I was out of there.

I'm still shaking. That was the most nervous I have ever been. Driving over 150 mph was easy compared to this. I was so worried about cracking or breaking an egg.

It's done. I really need everything to go smoothly from here. To be safe I moved Phyllis to the Cluckle Hut. She will be sleeping there from now on.

You have earned a stiff drink!

I am just glad my two finally gave up. Drive me bonkers - hopefully no more Will go broody this year.
Mine just keep cycling round and round.
Right now Tassels is back in jail I think this is four times this year.
Sylvie has given up. For now.
And Piglet is in the nest. She will go to jail once Tassels is released.
My poor chicken carer. This is way more work that she signed up for!

Can’t your township/municipality do anything about this? I would document the noise and debris and bring it to their attention. It’s a health and safety matter sounds like.

California is on the Mexican border that was made an open border with the current administration so without border security the state is swamped with illegal fireworks. On top of that although many surrounding cities ban illegal or even safe/sane gentle fireworks some cities still allow the gentle fireworks -- but that doesn't stop idiots from setting off the illegal noisy ones too. It is so widespread there isn't enough law enforcement resources to curb it.

We've lived in this poorer neighborhood nearly 40 years and it just gets worse every year. Idiots are invited by other neighborhood residents to the point that all lanes and avenues are blocked by visiting parked vehicles and populated by reveling celebrations. The problem is that society itself is getting more brazen and less respectful as the human race takes advantage to party without care for their fellow citizens.

Of course more expensive neighborhoods like Beverly Hills, etc, have excellent law enforcement and don't have a widespread problem BUT at the same time usually have ordinances prohibiting poultry-keeping.

We'll put up with the once-a-year insanity so we can keep our little flock which is enough now in our retirement. I'm a farm girl from the 1940's living on 5 agricultural acres with another 20 fallow acres across the country road plus the 2 fallow acres inherited from grandpa. As much as I remember peacefull idyllic farm life it's too much work for old folks like us now. Our little cottage yard life is enough today.

Too much overcrowding in the jail system! Maybe Tassels should go to therapy instead of being incarcerated? It’s your call, but there are plenty of other options besides jail. 👮‍♂️
