STRAW!
we are expecting a lot of snow today so i have the girls a pile of straw to play in. I think this video of them playing in the straw is interesting. I took video from 2 cameras at the same time. One is an older camera with no sound. Enjoy watching the girls at work.

Hattie was in the coop cuddled up next to a heater.

It's great to see them having so much fun on a day when they're confined to the complex (which is looking wonderful, by the way!)

The heavy snow has arrived.

Down the hill. There are houses that you can't see because the snow is so heavy. You can't see a block.

Meanwhile in the coop.....

I ordered a couple of bags of that. I can get bailed straw but only at certain times.
The snow has started in earnest but it is still warm. I am heading out for lunch with some friends. Hopefully I will be able to get back. The ploughs are out on the county roads. Worst case I can hike to my house from the road (done that before).
Chickens are set up with food and water for several days. No sign of condensation under the umbrellas so I am keeping them in place.
I do need to make it to the coop tonight to close the pop door and turn on the warming station.
The big freeze starts tomorrow.
Be safe! And enjoy your luncheon 😊

Next stage of Arctic blast prep underway. Food moved into the hen house where the warm-up station will be. Have put some cardboard around to cover some of the bigger and lower ventilation areas.
Second umbrella is up.
Now I am worrying that the umbrellas will be too effective and cause condensation to drip onto the chickens roosting underneath.
It should be cold enough tonight for me to test that concern giving me a whole day to figure how to take them down if I need to. I am probably over-worrying as really only three chickens roost underneath the umbrellas so there can’t be that much moisture??
Still thinking about a third umbrella over on the other side where Pooh and Sylvie roost but not sure it is needed. That is at the top of the hill so the total height is lower anyway.
I will add some fresh dry bedding tomorrow night.

Your interior decorating is outstanding, RC!

Have you ever had the slightest condensation in the Palace? It’s so large, so much air space, for how few chickens are in residence now. Add a cow or two, a few goats, different story.

🎼 Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but a roo would be so delightful, and because you have no better place to go, let him crow, let him crow, let him crow! :D
