Keeping in contact w/ the post office is a good idea. Some post offices hire temporary help that don't know the rule to call customer for pickup so I made a pest of myself calling the post office every day & twice on expected dates of arrival ~ especially after my 1st shipped experience the mailman thought it ok to have my two pullets bounce around in his hot truck for hours. I yelled (firmly calm) to get those birds out of his truck immediately or the USPS would be reimbursing me over $100 for dead insured birds! The driver returned to the post office immediately. It was a good thing the 2 pullets were older juveniles & not baby chicks in that bouncing mail truck! What was really annoying is that our post office always receives or ships chickens so there was no excuse not following postal policy to call customer for pickup. That's why I insisted all future breeders write in bold letters on the shipping box CALL CUSTOMER FOR PICKUP w/giant TELEPHONE #!!! Most breeders did their best & it worked to catch the attention of any nincompoop!

I like how you emphasized that you "firmly, but calmly" told him to get the birds out of the truck. It shows you're serious, but not mean.

It was 76° today when I got home from work!
Before anyone gets jealous, rain and 50's return Wednesday.
I start work tomorrow at the theatre for an almost two week run, so will likely get behind quick.

Happy Monday everyone.
Here is Piglet’s mug just before she got bowled over by the wind yesterday.
I am a big fan of her post-molt feather patterns.

She is so just so pretty 🤩
LF always decked out and gorgeous in spangles!
They are home! 12 of them! 2 extras, one Buff and an EE, both pullets! View attachment 4080973View attachment 4080974
Awll, how precious. I am so very glad they made it to you safe and sound.
Garden work late today. It's not too often I'm letting them out beyond their electric fence area because there's been a fox around, but both DH and I are out right now with them doing chores. They're sticking close to the buildings and us.

All four laid an egg today. Hazel was in the nest box yesterday morning for a few hours too, but finally laid today. Hers is the far left. Not as long as the last one, but definitely long.

Beautiful eggs, beautiful property you have and the chickens look so happy exploring.

I'm with Holly. I wouldn't let you cut my hair. I've seen what you have done to poor Mr Pompeii!
Tonight I did Jolly, I tried to pluck the feathers under her eyes but they wouldn’t budge, I hate trimming so close to eyes 😳

But it was so fun seeing them able fully see.

It’s the one good thing about Mr P not having his full topknot. He can see and do things - Ol well maybe picking fights with the boys isn’t good, but he follows his ladies everywhere, and keeps an eye to the sky 👍

Pretty feathers! Moults can really change a chicken's appearance & surprise us! I love new moults to see pretty feathers before they get worn & tatty & discolored especially from sun bleaching, dustbaths & muddy weather.

This was our Silver Partridge (Gray) Silkie chick who after 5 years of moults doesn't look the same any more. She's more of a dark gray all over now w/a stained silver belly. Her underdown is light but outer feathering darker & rust-stained from damp dustbaths

2024 ~ Suzu doesn't look the same w/ all her Silver markings stained from her garden bed dustbaths and darkening moult feathers ~ at 1st we thought it was gold leakage but she loves being a chicken & loves her damp dustbaths. I'll have to get more pictures of her or have DH take some current pics. The Dominique gets a bit dingy rust too before moult.

We had a Black Silkie "Mini" whose black feathers would fade rusty from sun bleaching & dustbaths but the next moult they would come in shiny black again.

W/ our Silkies I never knew they were moulting cuz their moults weren't obvious like smooth-feathered breeds... until one day I notice new crest pin feathers & cleaner colors w/ no stains!

Our golden feathered breeds didn't show as much obvious rust discoloration & was dusty gold & not as noticeable, they just lost shine till the next year's new shiny moult came in.

There must be a lot of iron in our soil cuz our White Leghorn would get dingy stained feathers too until her moult when pretty white feathers came in again.

Got a video March 6th of the 5 Silkies & older Dominique.

Suzu the Silver Partridge towards the end of the video is in the center eating spinach w/ the Buff-blue Partridge & Dark Partridge (looks black). The 2 Silkies that walked off camera to the right are the Moorhead Partridge & Blue Silkie
