Ooooh, extremely cute! Thanks! What are they crossed with to get the barring gene?
Originally it was Welsummer x Barred Rock. That was in the UK in the 1940s. But now they breed true and are not hybrids. I believe the Poultry Club of Great Britain recognizes them as a breed and has an SOP for them, however in the US they are just regarded as a type of Welsummer.
I am not into breeding or SOPs or anything, I just like them!
They lay a darkish, terracotta sort of brown egg with speckles. They are not prolific layers.
Bernie who died recently was a Gold Welbar and she laid a couple of times a week.

Everyone together.

Calypso is still being quite mean to Piglet. And they are all terrible enablers of Tassels.
I have been trying to haul Tassels off the nest since 9am. Every time I open the door there is someone else sitting in with her.
Only now at 4pm did I manage to get her out.
I am starting to prepare broody jail.
🙁

Woah, neat!

That must look magnificent. One of my girls lays dark speckled eggs & I love it. She’s a barnyard mix lol

Sorry for your loss :( my flock is mostly Silkie x EE crosses and they shockingly still lay despite being… gulp… 6 years old now…

Oh my, I had no idea Swedish Flower Hens could have crests!
They sure can :) The crests came in with the second import group that Greenfire Farms brought in. The story of how they got to the U.S. and how the breed gained some popularity is documented here on BYC and it’s really cool to go back and read through.

Wow, that’s awesome! Will definitely take a look at this later tonight.
