Yes. It's because of modern farming practices. They spray fertilize the fields with manure these days. That puts e. coli on the outside of the fruit. When you slice through with a knife it can transfer the bacteria to the inside where it can grow on the sugars in the fruit. Certain strains of e. coli can make you very sick.It's pure sugar energy & hydration, so definitely great for them in hot weather. A 2nd good option is cantaloupe. All melons should be washed well w/ produce soap before slicing? Something about intestinal bacteria?
