FBA synopsis June 28th - July 5th​

Last week's synopsis by @RoyalChick can be found here.

Surely lots of adorable things have happened at FBA this week, but some news to be shared first:

Now ARE YOU READY for chicks!!! @rural mouse has an explosion of chicks this week with 3 broody mamas!
First, some babies in the incubator.
Then we have a total of 17 chicks under two mama's.
Third, more babies for you!!!
Cardhu was quick to be out and about with chicks.
A really long vid for those who need a baby fix
Four videos.

Chicken math and chick math. hahaha.
Long vid on parenthood chaos.
All three mamas finally out!

Another piece I'd like to highlight is @ChicoryBlue 's flock. She's had some trouble. Kelly is always comforting and helpful. And here is a vet visit summary. I like replies (here and here) from @thistlewick . I think all these posts are informative and Good luck to Hazel and your young flock!

I still can’t wrap my brain around what poor Chick-fil-a must have experienced in the hands of a stranger. He was hatched with me present, and all he knew was the love I had for him. NO ANIMAL should be forced to endure that type of torture. This brings me to tears. I fed him corn, with hidden baby aspirin to comfort him today

I'm pleased he's hanging in there.

He's a brave little soul just like you ❤️

Hopefully he'll recover soon and enjoying being spoilt will help him ;)

Awesome recap of all those babies! I was getting lost trying to find them all myself!

That was an amazing synopsis!

"pecking order" is something that is observed in *cooped up confined chickens* and no one talks about it, but it was not a thing until some guy in 1912 made it up -- watching cooped up, overcrowded chickens. The old article is available online in various places.

Yes, other chickens peck at other chickens -- for access to food. It's about food. Mainly. The nighttime shenanigans happens bc 'no I WANT TO ROOST HERE' and that's about it. Also as many people are already aware, if you have roosts of the same height, there is much less of that.

So in a free ranging (chickens natural environment) where they have lots of access to lots of food, there is... peace. I have 70 chickens and there are no fights. I open the door 2 hours after dawn (they know the routine) and they go on about their day and do their own thing. It's not in a backyard, I'm on 24 acres. They have the space to be chickens. IMO, what I'm observing is far more natural behavior and I spend a LOT of time observing.

The most ruckus that ever happens is a randy Cockerel getting too big for his britches.

Here I find it’s nest boxes that cause the drama, and if a broody is in a nest box someone is going to drag them out! It’s especially annoying when I know they don’t use a nestbox, but someone decides to brood in it, so hey, ‘I want that box also’.

Bed time drama is all about ‘I don’t wanna go to bed’. Too bad get in there, I want to go to bed! This time of year it doesn’t get dark till going on 10pm so they don’t want to go to bed at 8.

The other thing is the old and infirm, poor Red is assaulted all the time by some of the other bully hens. They go out of their was to find her and beat on her. I keep her separate for this reason when I am not around.

As for the Roos, Mr P is boss here, Mr LC and he get scrapping, but they seem to have come to an understanding at the moment.

I find the secret to peace is multiple hiding spots, and food and water locations.
