Had a difficult task tonight. Hector had turned back into a hormonal idiot.....age 3..... ladies lingering out to avoid him....trouble staying on due to his feet (never fully straightened out from the vitamin deficiency when he was a chick). Shad's thread has had some discussion about when to remove a rooster and what truly constitutes a good rooster. Post hormonal idiocy phase he's one the ladies hang out with, tidbits the treat the them, they crouch without being chased and grabbed by him.

Doing some chick observation, I realized he's mostly off on the fringes, chasing the ladies, and a couple of them have stayed out to almost dark only to get grabbed with a ruckus the instant they poked their beaks into the coop. Last night, I was able to grab him and move him into the garage. One of the ladies not only didn't come back to the coop, but wasn't loitering around the door this morning. He spent the day in the garage. She turned up this evening. The only kerfuffle I heard this evening involved the chicks being told they had to move.

Due to the condition of Hector's feet, rehoming him to a rooster less flock isn't really feasible either. A friend gave me some daylilies to add to my garden today. They're now planted on his grave.
Tough decision. I'm sure you did what was best for everyone but I don’t envy you that decision. :hugs :hugs :hugs

Well it was going to happen. Tassels is teaching the Littles to be Jungle Fowl.
The hawk is around but this is probably the safest outside place there is.

New integration pen is here for when we move the chicklets out to the big coop. I will be dividing this group when they go off heat. Anyone with a pompom goes into the run with Riddick, and the rest will be free rangers. I need to repair my coop deck first, it has a fist sized hole that I will put mesh over.
Quartz and Little Dude will be moving out to the coop when the chicklets do.
Tempted to let Periwinkle sit on an egg because she is losing weight being so broody.

hi everyone

i am home and finally out of the anesthesia fog. My entire arm feels dead due to a nerve block. Sadly that is starting to wear off in the last 2 hours. I am following the anesthesiologists strict instructions on pain control. i took my first dose at 6. I am to continue taking them every 6 hours until Saturday. Then i take them as needed. He warned me to not delay in taking them even if i was not hurting. if i let the pain set in i will be in a world of trouble. he said if i can keep ahead of it untill saturday then it will be smooth sailing. they do make me a little loopy, but i am sleeping most of the time.

i probably will not be on tomorrow. this typing one handed is for the birds.
I'm so glad it went well. Get some good rest. 💗
It's good that you're staying on top of the pain. After my knee replacement, I made the mistake of not taking my pain medication during the night, amazingly I slept through. The next morning it felt like someone had cut my leg off and then sewn it back together, which is kind of what they did.

It was a process. Observe, think, read more on the rooster behavior, think, observe....

Your are a good chicken keeper. One must always take the flocks well being into consideration, and you do this always.

In fact everyone here is amazing with their flocks - kudos to everyone for being good ‘chicken tenders’ ♥️

OMG. Geronimo can get up to the adult roost. Cookie tried but just fell short.
It was so fast I almost missed it. Freeze frame. The red ring is Geronimo flying from the grown-up roost, over the heads of Tassels and the other littles, through the door and down the hill.
If I were Tassels, by this stage I would be resorting to the gun bottle to calm my nerves.
