Ugghhh! I think the trick is put the trap in the rats ‘path’ take all the food and water away so that the rats hungry for the bait. Maybe put a crate or something on the top to make it feel more secure?

They are clever little monsters. & there are over 300 species around the world! Don't move too much around... if they detect changes they avoid the area & move to a different area of your housing. Use fresh yummy bait each night but dont move things around. Cover feed & water or empty them but don't move them.

Ok who is sick now

Patches. Haven’t had anyone showing signs since last week. Darn.

She received a dose of Tylosin and some Tylenol last night. She wheezed through the night, but came roaring out the hen house door this morning with the rest and proceeded to eat as usual, still wheezing this morning. I’ll assess her tonight when I get home, but I stopped the Tylosin in the water and feed for everyone. If anyone else is ill they will get individual doses of the Tylosin.

Hopefully she’s the last to be ill.

Well they run the Aunt Kelly now hahaha. Cute little nuggets. Whiskers still sleeps with them, for which I am grateful, they are not fuzzy enough yet to handle this chilly weather on their own.

WHEREVER there's one, be assured there are plenty more around the property. They come around in spurts... maybe several in one month then nothing for a while... then it starts again. Be patient... keep the trap out w/ fresh bait... don't clean the area of droppings or move things around. Rats are very very wary about changes. & make the bait sweet fresh or tasty.

No droppings to be seen - so they must be moving through if so.

Our neighborhood cats have been pretty good so far, even around the smaller Silkies ~ they seem to accept each other. But lone truly feral really hungry cats can see little chicks as food. Of course, aerial predators see chicks as easy prey too. What I hear from chick people is that they don't free-range mammas w/chicks till they are 3-4 months old if they're having predator issues. Rural mouse has a lot of lovely underbrush for her chicklets rather than open yard so her chicks luckily have been hidden a lot. She also has kitties of her own that I'm guessing must be keeping ferals (& rodents?) away too?

So sorry about losing track of the missing chicks. Heartbreaking for mammas too
