WOW that is amazing!!!!!!!!! did you let them rest before you gave them to your broody's? I haven't had luck with shipped eggs yet (did get 2 to hatch out of my first 12 they just weren't the breed they should have been) . have 2 more boxes of shipped eggs coming Friday so just want to hopefully have SOME hatch!!!!!
Doin' the Happy Dance tonight! My little EE mama now has SIX! With the two under Gem, the Cochin, we now have eight little Nankins. Summer is still setting on her last handful of eggs, so who knows, we may get one or two more, but we're already at waaay more than I expected to hatch from this batch ... which was precisely "zero!"

It was my first time using shipped eggs and Nannies don't usually ship well, anyway - their eggs are too little and round so the veining breaks with just a bit of tossing. This particular box had a really deep ding in the center of the top and was delayed for four days in 90+ degree heat. So, I wasn't very hopeful to start with.

And yes, I did let them rest before I gave either hen a chance to set. The rose comb eggs under Gem sat for almost 48 hours before I put them in with her. Summer had the single combs, and I put hers in at the same time, but it took her another four days to decide she really wanted to do this thing. So, when Gem's hatch was so poor, I really didn't expect Summer's to do well, at all ... SURPRISE!

I am SO excited about this! There aren't many Nankin breeders, yet. We've only just moved them up from "Critically Endangered" to "Threatened," so they're not out of the proverbial woods (or jungle ... they're the closest breed to the Jungle Fowl) yet, but we're making progress. At this point, every baby counts. I'm THRILLED to get eight. It's only a 33% hatch rate, but when I truly expected to lose them all, I'll take it!

33% is amazing seeing they were shipped and all they went through in shipping and being lost, then Summer taking so long to sit!!!!

At this point with my luck with eggs not going through that I would be thrilled to get 33%. Lol. But good to hear they say for 48+ hours and still did well. I have some arriving tomorrow and in order to have them hatch when I am around I can't set them till Mon!!! So around 72 hrs.... But will only be 7 days or less from when they were laid so hopefully will get some to hatch!

Congratulations! It’s rough when you’re excited about eggs & the usps screws them all up. I’m glad yours are hatching!

Also, thank you for the info on Nankins. I’d never heard of them prior to this HAL but I’m definitely going to look into them now.

#26 just hatched She did the pip, zip & hatch all in the past 30 mins

Well, Day 21 here and nothing has hatched. I candled the 3 remaining eggs in the bator and there are no internal pips. I was expecting a late hatch since the broody kept getting kicked off the nest, so hopefully they will hatch in a day or two. Two of the eggs have air cells that are wobbly on one side but hopefully they will still be able to hatch. Fingers crossed that something will hatch!

9/15 hatched. 4 were DIS and never internally pipped. There was movement at lockdown but they did look underdeveloped compared to the other eggs. The other two that didn’t make it were malpositioned and never externally pipped.
Photo of two of the ones that made it! 4 paint and 5 various shades of blue.😊

I LOVE my Nannies! You can find out more about them here:
https://livestockconservancy.org/heritage-breeds/heritage-breeds-list/nankin-chicken/
The Livestock Conservancy - the watchdog that globally tracks heritage and endangered livestock breeds - does a regular poultry census. Just last year, Nankins moved from Critically Endangered to Threatened.
You can check out many other livestock breeds that need help - you'll be surprised how many domestic animals that we think of as common are actually in danger of disappearing forever. It's pretty cool too know that you're part of saving a piece of history. I HIGHLY recommend it!
